Music returns to Courthouse Park

After a winter hiatus, the Goderich
Business Improvement Area (BIA) will
kick-off the' 2009 Thursday concert se-
ries in Courthouse Park July 2 with a
performance by The Pastels.
Each Thursday from now until the
final installment September 3, the BIA
will host an evening of music in the
town's centre designed to showcase lo-
cal talent at no cost to the public.
On July 2, fans of big band music will
want to take in The Pastels. After a se-
ries intermission on July 9 to make way
for the Kinsmen Summerfest, Melliflu-
ence Duo "From Classics to Ragtime"
takes to the bandstand on July 16.
The series continues July 23 when four
performers from the "Noted" Women
of Huron County project by the Huron
United Way including Melina Hussey,
Jenna Ujiye, Ashley Anderson and Sar-
ah Koopmans. Music lovers won't want
to miss The Double Feature on July 30,
when Finola MacGinty teams up with
4tpes. Gro w demand from China

Pad performance never guarantees what will happen in the future, but people who
erstood the long-term history of oil Would not have been surprised by a precipitous
decline. They would have realized that for more than a century, oil has moved up and moved
down in cycles tied to economic factors. As a result, they would know that any refrains of "this
tlme.is different" might best be met with skepticism - with reflections going back to the year 2000
when similar thanking was common about technology stocks, just before that bubble burst in
dramatic fashion.
If there's something to be learned about the spectacular rise and fall of oil prices in 2008,
it's the importance of diversification. While it's true that diversification cannot guarantee a
profit or protect against a loss, you will likely find that it's a very sensible approach to mitigate
the extreme risk you can be subjected to when investing too heavily in one sector. This year's
experience served as a very expensive lesson for those who put most of their investing eggs into
the energy basket - especially if done toward the tail end of oil's rise to the upside.
'The point is not tit avoid energy stocks - just to keep things balanced. For your portfolio, you
might want to consider having a relatively modest percentage in high-quality energy stocks
(i.e. not the smaller, more speculative ones). For example, that level could be about 10 per cent.
That's enough to give you solid exposure to energy, but in an appropriate proportion relative to
other sectors, such as technology and consumer staples, which could themselves have similar
weightings.
By regularly reviewing and rebalancing your portfolio in light of market performance, you would
be able to take advantage of oil's rise but also limit your downside risk when oil, declined.
In other words, to keep your weighting at 10 per cent, you would do some selling if energy
stocks outperformed other sectors and rose to reach a percentage weighting far greater
thMn 10. Similarly, if those stocks.had dropped to the point that your overall weighting would be
much less than 10 percent, you would follow the discipline of buying more (known as dollar -
cost averaging) to bring thelevel backup to 10. This technique would allow you to take all the
emotion and guess work but of energy prices, which are extremely difficult for anyone to predict.
Spear with your financial advisor to discuss ways to ensure that yotigr portfolio's energy weighting
and. the weightings of other sectors are in appropriate bala ;
