signal -star staff
More than 120 artisans and vendors
will display their Nvorks this weekend
during the 24th annual Festival of Arts
and Crafts.
It is more than just a festival, accord-
ing to coordinator Andrea Brown. For the
past 24 years, it has become a tradition to
residents and visitors alike.
"I know that a lot of people mark it on
their calendars. My family always did,"
Brown said. "It's a really unique and neat
festival, even if you're not in the market
for anything, you find yourself wander-
ing around, chatting, and often come out
with a one -of -a -kind piece of art."
The festival kicks off this year July 3
in Courthouse Park on The Square from
noon to 8 p.m. and continues July 4 and
5. The Shriner's will once again host their
Fish Fry Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
while musical guests the Goderich Lake -
town Band will set the tone from 4:30 to
6 p.m.
Saturday the festival is open from 1O
a.m. to 6 p.m., with a special performance
at the gazebo bandstand by David Walker
at 2 p.m.
Sunday, the festival gets underway at
noon and wraps up at 4 p.m.

Crafts brings in a plethora of artists
skilled in media ranging from photog-
raphy and jewelry to glass and wooden
pieces. Its loyal following each year in-
cludes both shoppers and vendors, which
help to make the Goderich festival one of
the most popular in the area.
"We have a good core of vendors who
keep coming back," Brown said, "And
even (last week) while getting my hair
cut, I had a lady telling me that she never
misses it. I think it's something a lot of
people look forward to as a nice stroll
through the park."
The Festival has been a summertime
mainstay for nearly a quarter of a cen-
tury. It's organized and executed by the
Women's Shelter, Second Stage Housing
and Counseling Services of Huron as an
annual fundraising initiative. All proceeds
garnered from vendor fees go directly
back to the organization to help fund op-
erations.
"So when you shop for that perfect wed-
ding, birthday or unique gift that won't
have a double, you can feel good about
it even more knowing that you're helping
support the community," Brown added.
Along with artist and crafts vendors, a
number of local not-for-profit agencies
also set up booths to kick-off their own
.fundraising initiatives.

Last Day
Students rushed out of Victoria on the last, last school day for the building on
Thursday. When school ends next year, students will be rushing out of Goderich
Public School, which is currently known as Robertson Memorial Public School..
Students in Grades Kindergarten to 6 will attend Victoria until renovations are
done on the site of the new school, and Grades 7 and 8 will be assimilated into
Goderich District Collegiate Institute. Above, (left to right) Jessica Pigg and
Danielle Dale celebrate their summer freedom with hands raised while Austin
Baynton (back) and Quinn Ross (foreground) rush to get home and start their
vacation.
