Goderich is now closer than
ever to having its own opera-
tional CT Scanner.
Rick Bedard, Director of Clin-
ical Support Services at Alexan-
dra Marine and General Hospital
(AMGH) in Goderich has re-
cently revealed that the tender-
ing process has been success-
fully completed, and the result
came in within budget.
"We're very pleased about
the progress so far, it's all great
news," Bedard said. "The of-
ficial award and signing of the
contract will be completed with-
in two weeks. Following this,
we'll be able to move ahead with
construction."
As- soon as the ink dries on
the successful contract, AMGH
will move ahead with project ar-
chitects Walter — Fedy and the
to -be -named construction com-
pany to establish project phas-
ing. Bedard said this will create
a workable timeline for equip-
ment arrival, installation and
"go -live" date.
"CT Scanners are custom or-
dered, each one is built to in-
dividual specifications so the
phasing is an important part
of the project to align delivery
dates," Bedard said.
AMGH expects a ground-
breaking ceremony mid-July,
with construction underway be-
fore July's end, though Bedard
added specific dates when the
new equipment will be opera-
tional could not be confirmed
until phasing is complete.
Project architects invited eight
pre -qualified contractors to en-
ter their bid for the job.
At present, Huron is the only
county in the province without
a CT scanner — a distinction
locals have been working dili-
gently over the past five years
to shake. In August 2007, On-
tario Minister of Health George
Smitherman visited Goderich
and announced the province's
approval of a scanner to operate
at AMGH. After little more than
two years, the county rallied to-
gether to raise $5 million for the
CT Scanner for Huron County
campaign, one that funded a
large part of the equipment
purchase and installation costs.
Now, the countdown is on as
residents can watch their dollars
at work with each step closer to
operation.
"It's finally coming together!"
Bedard added.

Home sweet home
Medical residents and healthcare students have a new place to call home in
Goderich with the opening of the four bedroom house on Montcalm Street.
Following an official ribbon -cutting June 29, dignitaries and guests were wel-
come to tour the house, which was furnished by donations from the community.
The building has been owned by the hospital for some time, being used as stor-
age and as a clinic during their fire, life and emergency upgrade. Previously, the
building served as Dr. Mike Dawson's office. Above, Mayor Deb Shewfelt, Mary -
Beth Vlemmix, director of Support Services, Dr. Julie Moore, past chief of staff
at AMGH, and Wayne Lions, AMGH board chair, officially open the house during
the ceremony.
