Super Pull makes it through the rain

If your engine didn't crack on the track in Dungannon,
it'll last you the rest of the year.
That was the consensus among pullers as the 10th an-
nual Dungannon Super Pull rolled up the clay Saturday
after a heavy run in the mud.
Sixty engines in 14 classes took their turn on the track
June 20, and many pullers took no prisoners with a num-
ber of 'full pulls' gripping through to the Epcor 300. Many
others cracked under the torque.
Nearly 4,000 fans are estimated to. have attended the
annual truck and tractor pull, and pull committee presi-
dent Steve Adams said he wonders how many more there
would have been if the sky was clear. Fielding calls from
Windsor, Sarnia, Woodstock, and even Michigan, pull en-
thusiasts had Adams' phone working overtime as the rain
fell hard Saturday morning.
"I had fans calling from all over wanting to make the
drive if the pull was still a 'go'," Adams said.
At the eleventh hour though, Mother Nature conceded.
The grey clouds parted to reveal a hint of blue as the na-
Calling for Volunteers
The Council of the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh passed
By -Law 30-2009, being a by-law to prescribe and enforce standards for
maintenance of property within the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh, excluding agriculturally zoned lands. This by-law shall
establish of a committee to hear appeals of orders in accordance with
the act. The Township is calling for three volunteers to sit on the
Property Standards Committee. This committee has all the powers and
functions of the officer who made the order, and the committee by doing
so, would maintain the general intent and purpose of the by-law, and ,
either confirm, modify, rescind, or extend the time for complying with
the order.
All interested volunteers are asked to submit their letter of interest to
the undersigned, no later than July 2nd by 12 noon.

tional anthem played across the
Dungannon Fair Grounds.
"Our biggest stress of the
whole day was the rain," Adams
said. "I was worried no fans were
going to show up. But, the way
everything turned out was excel-
lent."
Organizer and go -to guy, Ad-
ams is fast becoming the poster
boy for a great pull. Thanks to the
dedication of he and his volunteer
team, the Super Pull has garnered
the attention of the province, as
well as its American neighbours.
"A couple of weeks ago, we had a [government] repre-
sentative visit us in Dungannon," announcer Mark Groves
boomed across the track. "He said, 'we've heard so much
about the Super Pull here, we've had to put Dungannon
on the map."'
There was hard luck for a couple of local boys this
year, Adams reported. Auburn's Rodgers brothers' Green
Reaper, Joe Hannah's Angry Allis, and even Shawn Rod-
gers' Farmers Fun of Bayfield cracked before the traction
power of the Super clay.
"And that was just the 6,000 pound Farm -Mod tractor
class," Adams said.
Even the Bud Bandit, Clinton resident Jim Middleton's
'92 Chev 646 couldn't quite make the golden line reading
Full Pull after two attempts in the dirt.
But it wasn't all bad news. After years perched atop the
announcers' podium, Adams got himself back in the mud
for the 10th anniversary. He and brother, Dave, each ran
the JD 5010 That Stink'n Deere to a second place victory
in the 9,300 pound Super Farm class.
"I just knew we had put a show on for the hometown
crowd, I told myself go and giv'er all she's got, and I did.
It's a thrill, exhilarating, your hearts still beatin' half hour
after it's over," he said. A thrill rivaled only by the execu-
tion of a full pull.
After the last engine tore up the 300 foot stretch and
the sun settled under the horizons, explosions ran out
over Dungannon as a 15 -minute fireworks display lit up a
glowing backlit sky.
"What a way to finish -up the 10th anniversary," Adams
said. "When we started this thing, we thought we'd be
lucky to pull off the first one. Now here we are, and we'll
keeper going as long as we can."
As the crowd made their way out sporting Super Pull t -
shirts, bumper stickers, hats, and even coolie -cups, many
