Victor Kloeze, a student from GDCI is
heading to North Africa to represent Cana-
da at the International Science Fair.
Kloeze's project_ started nearly two years
ago when his family was looking to build
a new home.
"[The house] is designed for the aver-
age family, and designed to reduce energy
consumption without making them change
their lives," Kloeze said. "It has super in-
sulated walls, lots of southern -facing win-
dows, high-density floors, and shadow
angles designed to allow full shade in the
summer, and no shade in the winter."
He said had to determine global angles
for shadows, and Ogure out which materi-
als would best be used, should the house
ever be built.
Kloeze worked his way to the National
Science fair in Winnipeg, Manitoba after
winning locally, regionally and provin-
cially. His next challenge will be impress-
ing judges at the international show, which
runs from July 23 to 28 in Tunis. Tunisia.
"It) great being part of Team Canada,"
he said.
Getting as far as he has wasn't easy, ac-
cording to Kloeze, who said he was the
• first participant in 15 years to compete for
GDCI at the regional science fair.
Kloeze explained that he won $38,500
in scholarships from.his various competi-
tions, $20,000 of which was an entrance
scholarship to the University of Ottawa, in
addition to smaller prizes from other uni-
versities.
"The problem is I'm going to Waterloo,"
Kloeze; laughed. "I'm hoping 1 can use the
scholarship for graduate school."
Kloeze also won the Via Enviro-Expo
Arts and Science award at the Canadian
fair, which net him a MAX) scholarship
t any Canadian university. •
The experience of planning his house
has encouraged Koeze to go into an archi-
tecture -based program at Waterloo, and is
looking at switching over to urban design
eventually.
He said he project couldn't have been
completed without his parents. Kloeze
also wanted to thank the Science Fair
Foundation for covering part of his North
African trip, the chaperones for the fairs,
and his fellow competitors.
