This year, the honour goes to Audrey Kerr. At 86 -years -young, Audrey has never slowed down. She's known throughout her commu- nity as an energetic and enter- taining•staple at the Royal Cana- dian Legion Branch 109, where she holds her own each Friday night, •tinkling the ivories to. the delight of her captive' audience. Her lifelong love of music and performing has only gotten stronger as years passed, and she said she won't slow down until her fingers give out. "I love entertaining," Audrey told The Signal -Star last week. "Especially the seniors, they don't get out the same way as they used to." Audrey is a true Goderich gal, born and raised in the commu- nity. She and her two brothers, Elgin and Ernie Fisher (former Mayor of Goderich) shared her passion for music, and at the age of four, she began tinkering with piano keys. "My mother taught piano, but I never wanted to practice— only when the dishes needed to be done," Audrey joked. "She even sent me to another teacher who told my mother, 'It's no use to teach her to play by note, she never will." And she didn't. Audrey learned to play only by ear, and her in- credible natural talent took the wheel and steered her into a suc- cessful local music career. She's been part of the Elgin Fisher trio, a family band made up of Au- drey, her brother Elgin and one of her aunts. She was a regular performer on the CKNX Barn Dance television show, where she often sang along while she played. "But they don't ask me to sing anymore," Audrey added with a laugh. After she retired from playing professionally, Audrey has never turned down the opportunity to bring enjoyment to anyone who wants to listen. She frequents re- tirement communities through- out Huron County, and keeps the local Bag Ladies entertainment and music group right on key as accompanist. She brings her jaunty sounds to area dining and day -away programs, as well. "Audrey has taught the Bag Ladies that everyone deserves to be entertained," said Legion president, MacKay Centre and Bag. Ladies member June Py- ette. "She's incredibly giving of Photo by Dominique Milburn Audrey Kerr has been awarded the Senior of the Year award in 2009 for her ongoing work to share her music and talent with the community. Pyette spearheaded the charge to nominate Audrey through the MacKay Centre for Seniors in Goderich. "We are very proud of Audrey and amazed at the stamina she has," Pyette added. Audrey was joined by family members June 22 in Goderich council chambers where she was awarded her title and plaque by Councillors David Yates• and Ray Hurd, Mayor Deb Shewfelt and Clerk -Administrator Larry McCabe, all of whom "made a big fuss," Audrey said. "I'm so excited for this, but I just like to play for the audience," she added. "It makes me feel so good that I can do that." • L tt_) ? t( HAIR SIUDI() • „`Amanda & Tara'R Would Like To Invite You To Their GRAND OPENING Saturday June 27th 12:00 to 2:OOp.m. At 74 The Square, Goderich (519) 440-5155 Refreshments &Snacks Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, June 24, 2009 - Page A9 WEEKENDS IN THE PARK FARMER'S MARKET Fresh Ontario Grown Fruits and Vegetables •Handmade Local Crafts •Honey & Maple Syrup •Homemade Baking •Flowers & Plants •Fresh Meats For more info call 5245356 SATURDAYS 8amtolpm South Side Courthouse GODERICH FLEA MARKET ( Previously held at Huron County Gaol ) Unique items including new & used, books, jewellery, golf clubs, toys, trading cards, collectibles, produce & plants and more!
