Health Unit confirms first two cases of H1N1 flu virus
The Huron County Health Unit received
laboratory confirmation this week of the
first two cases of H1N1 Flu Virus in Hu-
ron County residents.
Two adults have been treated and re-
leased to recouperate at home.
The Huron County Health Unit reported
June 19 that its first confirmed case af-
fected an adult with underlying medical
conditions. The second affected patient,
confirmed June 22, was reportedly in con-
tact with someone diagnosed with H1N1
Flu Virus.
Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Nancy
Cameron, says it's not surprising to have
the County's first confirmed case.
"There are over 2,000 cases across On-
tario now. So far H1N1 Flu Virus has be-
haved much like the seasonal influenza in
terms of symptoms and how it's spread,"
Cameron said. "This second case simply
tells us what we've been expecting - like
the rest of the province, the H1N1 Flu Vi-
rus is present in Huron County"
While Huron County doesn't usually see
influenza in the summertime, Cameron
said the H1N1 Flu Virus is like seasonal
flu. To stop the spread of any germ, people
should pay particular attention to good
hand washing.
She added there's no evidence right now
that anything has changed in terms of the
severity of the virus. In Ontario, only a
small number of people have needed hos-
pitalization. Most make a full recovery
without any complications.
Cameron says to reduce the risk of spread
of respiratory illness people should:
•Wash hands frequently and thoroughly
with soap and hot water or, if soap and wa-
ter are unavailable, use an alcohol -based
hand sanitizer;
•Sneeze or cough into a sleeve or arm;
•Stay home if sick; and,
•Frequently clean commonly touched
surfaces such as keyboards, doorknobs,
countertops etc.
Symptoms for influenza are similar to
those for seasonal flu: headache, chills,
cough, fever, loss of appetite, muscle aches
and fatigue, runny nose, sneezing, watery
eyes and throat ir-
ritation. Vomiting
and diarrhea have
also been reported
in some cases.
