According to architect Alan Avis, the town hall build is seeing very few bumps in the road from foundation to finish. "It's coming along great," he said. "This is one of the smoother projects we've done overall." Renovation of the old town hall build- ing have yet to be completed, however as work moves indoors on the project, the two buildings will be finished con- currently. "Everything will be done at the same time," Avis said. Last week, workers from Bruinsma excavating were busy installing a cis- tern beneath a recess at the western end of the building. A green initiative, the 10,000 litre tank will collect rain water from the flat roofs of the building to be used for watering the gardens and out- door areas of the site. Using rain water for town irrigation, Avis said, would keep demand low for the municipal water supply. In case of drought, Avis said watering wound be a low priority, however with 2,500 gallons of storage channelled through drip -hoses, even little water can last a long time. Last week workers from 13ronnenco Contracting were busy finishing the basement of the building and getting ready for when the exterior brick arrive, some time next week. The masonry will begin roughly one week from now. Steel for the roof decks is also expect- ed to arrive within a week, and Bron- nenco site supervisor Renier Janssen said roofing will begin about two weeks after that. Because the fibreglass tank is only holding Water, there is no risk of toxic- ity should a leak develop. However, he said that is unlikely to happen for quite some time. "I wouldn't be surprised if this lasted 50, 60... even 75 years," Avis said. Meanwhile, all of the holes are drilled and pipes laid for the geo-thermal heat- ing system, with work to be finished by Geo-teck. The elevator tower is also completed and ready for installation. Of note is the Canadian content of the new buildling. All of the windows, Avis said, are coming from Drummondville, Quebec. In the interim, town hall staff and ser- vices are all available across the street, at Goderich Hydro. Jenssen said despite the construction signs and fencing, some residents are still wandering into the did town hall buildling to pay bills and make enqui- ries. Goderich Hydro is located at 64 West Street.
