Final grader goes to Huron County
The final motor grader off the
assembly line at Volvo Motor
Graders' Goderich manufacturing
facility will be turned over to the
County of Huron.
A special edition Volvo G960
will be presented to Ken Oke,
Warden of Huron County, at a cer-
emony scheduled to be held at the
Volvo Acquatic Centre at the
Maitland Recreation Centre YMCA
on Tuesday, June 30 at 11 a.m. Jay
Davis, General Manager of the
Goderich manufacturing facility,
will present the grader on behalf of
Volvo Construction Equipment.
Leading up to the presentation,
Oke said. "These motor graders
have always been a trademark for
Huron County. Anybody would be
proud to see this machine going by
on our streets?'
According to Davis, factory staff
approached county representatives
last year, shortly after Volvo
announced that the Goderich facil-
ity would close its doors before this
summer. The county was offered a
10 -year, no -charge lease to accept
the last grader off the Goderich
line. Volvo also provided the town
of Goderich a 10 -year no -charge
lease for the first grader off the line
to carry the Volvo name and recent-
ly extended the tern of the lease to
2014.
"We felt that having this grader
go to Huron County made total
sense;" Davis said. "The closing of
this factory is a county challenge
that affects all nine municipalities
within its boundaries. The people
here are going to have to work
together as a county to be globally
competitive. We hope this grader
will be a symbol of rebuilding in
the county."
The last grader marks the end of
over 100 years of grader manufac-
turing in Goderich, where the
world's first motorized grader was
built. The company will now pro-
duce motor graders at the Volvo
Road Machinery facility in
Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
"Everything changed after
September last year. Our overrid-
ing goal since then, as a company,
• his been for our employees to
`transition with pride.'" Davis said.
" We introduced a number of pro-
grams with Volvo employees help-
ing Volvo employees. We set our
quality inspection standard to the
