You need to swing early for this kind of change -up, Goderich
The designated -hitter rule, five -pin bowl-
ing, face -masks for goalies, women's bas-
ketball; there have been many changes and
adaptations to sport throughout the years, and
now the pages of the Signal -Star are no ex-
ception.
Starting July 3, all weekend submissions to
the sports section will have to be in Monday
by 8:00 a.m.
If your game is during the week, deadline
is Friday at 2 p.m.
As our print schedule changes, so do the
times for submissions and I want you to get
your stuff in early so I can do the same.
We are just four days away from summer
and if last year is any indication of what lay
in store for your local sports pages (and sports
reporters), there will be an incredible depth of
local, young talent headed off to this provin-
cial games or that national competition, and I
want to tell one and all about it.
I also want to take the opportunity to thank
the many contributors that make this sports
section possible.
Soccer, baseball, boxing, track and field,
shuffleboard, golf, hockey, ringette, bowling
and beyond - it is all appreciated and not just
by me.
I'm sure if you toured every home in town,
you'd find familiar names in black and white
gracing refrigerators from Huckins to the hos-
pital and from Lake Huron to Central Huron.
If you are a contributor, that's your handi-
work being clipped out and kept by parents,
Seabreeze back
to full bench for
Belmont win
Gerard Crags
signal -star staff
It was a slower week for the Goderich
Seabreeze ladies' soccer team, with just one
game on the schedule against Belmont at
home Sunday.
After last week's four -game schedule, the
Seabreeze had a lighter agenda on the pitch,
taking a 3-1 win June 14.
A regular on the scoreboard, Nadine Van-
denHeuval was moved up to forward this
season, and the results have been very posi-
tive for the team, notching another goal in
Sunday's match.
"(Nadine) used to play half," said coach
Tom Costello: "She's got a great shot."
The ladies have had to work hard this year,
with a predominantly short bench covering
for a number of injuries. However, Sunday's
game saw a full five subs, allowing the Sea -
breeze to get a periodic breather.
Costello said the team's newer players are
working nicely into the rotation, adding their
passing skills are definitely a plus for God-
erich's game.
The ladies are in Mount Forest next, tak-
ing on Delco.
He said past games against Delco have
been tight, and no matter what, some excel-
lent soccer will be played.
"It's always 1-0 or 1-1 either way;" he
said. "It should be a good game."
The Seabreeze's next home game is June
28 at 5p.m. with a possible cup game tenta-
tively scheduled for the 26th.
grandparents and kids alike.
Well done!
I'll be honest, it's tough
keeping up with all the ac-
tivity that goes on in this
town. I hear it all the time...
"I sent something in and
it didn't get printed. What
gives?"
Good question. There
are an endless amount of reasons I can of-
fer here, but to save everyone time, I will say
that space is my most common consideration.
Frequency is a close second. If you're in the
paper every week, I may have to bench you
for an inning or two just to give the rookies
some time on the field.
Another one that comes across my inbox is,
"where were you when this was going on?"
It's a doozy, that one is. Stings every time!
Omniscient as I would like to imagine my-
self, I don't know everything that is going on
all the time. If I did, chances are my mop -
topped head would explode.
I' m much easier to talk to than to read I've
been told, so just call and I will do what I can
to tell your story to the masses. Or, blaze the
same trail as countless parents and coaches
before and send me something in. I' m more
than happy to give credit where it's due.
So, to sum it all up again, as of July 3 dead-
lines are Mondays - 8 a.m. for weekend stuff.
Fridays - 2 p.m for weekday submissions.
Many thanks to our contributors and my
utmost appreciation for your patience with
the changing of our (and your) deadlines.
Remember, it doesn't matter who's win-
ning, kid. Everybody's stickin' !
