of dance hall memories
"The headlines in the first 1947 issue of
the Goderich Pavilion Dance News whetted
dance fans' appetites for the upcoming dance
season. After a long cold winter, The Pav'
was ready to open its doors once again, fea-
turing bands like Ted Pudney, Bobby Gimby,
Johnny Downs, Stan Patton, Marty Kenney
and Art Hallman."

The era of Big Band swing and hard -rock-
ing parties along the Goderich bluff are long
passed, but the memories of the dance hall
days still remain vivid for many Goderich
residents. That might be why the local Rotary
Club has dusted off their dancing shoes for a
swinging new fundraising event.
The Rotary Club of Goderich is hosting
"The Pav" Dance Party June 20 at the Me-
morial Arena. The age of majority event will
feature musical guests, Reload, and promises
"music, food and fun."
"I'm still a youngster at a little over 50, but
The Pav means a lot of great memories for
the over 60s," said event chair Doran Love.
"We wanted to bring that back for a wide age
range."
The night is set to open doors at 8 p.m.
with dancing from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a
quick refueling with pizza at midnight. For
the advanced price of a $15 ticket, commu-
nity members are invited to relive the days
of dancing the night away at one of the areas
most cherished meeting places,
"It's just a way to let your hair down, have a
few pops and have fun," Love added.
Proceeds from the event will go toward
sponsoring the Big Brothers and Big Sisters
North Huron, the Huron Women's Shelter
and Rotary International projects.
Tickets are available at the Goderich Sco-
tiabank and TD branches, as well as at the
door for $18.
Long before television, stereos, boom box-
es, the worldwide web, Ipods or text messag-
es, hooking up, entertainment, and fun meant
dancing. And the shore of Lake Huron was
where it happened.
The summer dance pavilions dotting the
shoreline from Owen Sound to Sarnia were
the places to be from the May long weekend
to Labour Day.
Always located close to the lake and show-
casing the best bands and music around, The
Pav's were popular and packed. Friendly
competition arose between owners as to who
had the best dance floor surface or the big-
gest. No matter --they were always full and a
good time was bound to be had.
Built for $12,000 in 1920 as the Goderich
Pavilion, and renamed in the 1950's, the Har-
bourlite Inn continued to be called The Pav
by locals.
Over 1,000 people attended the grand
opening in June of 1920. The 36 x 90 dance
floor comfortably held 225 couples.
Wednesday evenings evolved into coun-
try and western dances. Teen dances became
very popular with CKNX disc jockeys pro-
viding the music.
After over half a century of music and
dance, New Year's Eve 1972 marked the end
of the Goderich Pavilion. 500 people turned
out to say goodbye. In 1973, the land was
sold, contents were auctioned including the
floor, and the building was demolished.Even-
tually, three things resulted in the demise of
dance pavilions: the automobile, drive-in the-
atres and especially television. People were
able to travel longer distances, no longer fre-
quenting local entertainment spots, and tele-
vision brought music, sports, drama right into
their living rooms—no need to go out at all.

A guiding example
of Goderich have been a busy parks, Brownies and Girl -Guides Y bunch in the
last few months as they continually strive toward badges and betterment.
In mid May, the four members of the 2nd Goderich Gid Guides cleaned house -
outside- by collecting the clutter from the grounds at Knox Church to say thanks to
the facility for use of space. On May 8, 9 and 10, the three groups spent the week-
end with nature as part of the twice -annual camp -outs. Back in April, members of
the Guides, Brownies and Sparks spent a day with Rev.Vanderstelt as part of their
three -steps towards achieving the Learning About Faith badge. Above, Guides
Emily Horton, Dani Dale, Kassy Ross, and Amy Good help clean up at Knox
Church.
