While the proposed $47 million expansion of Goder- ich's North Harbour is still waiting for any sort of senior government funding, work is underway to make sure. the public has their say in the project. A public information session was held June 10 at the Huron County Museum on Bruce Street, and people from every aspect of the project were on -hand to answer any questions the public had about the terms of reference need- ed for an environmental assessment to take place. Expansion of the north wharf, the creation of approxi- mately 15 acres. of land and the potential industry that would evolve from it - the potential for the project is im- mense. in terms of not only capacity in Goderich Harbour, but economically, geographically and industrially. Senior planner at BM Ross in Goderich, Matt Pearson, said a project this size requires people experience with massive infrastructure works. Enter Grant Kauffman, a senior planning ecologist for environmental research firm LGL limited. Kauffman has worked on the Detroit River internationall crossing, the Spadina subway extension in Toronto, and the Eglinton cross-town line to name a few. He said Goderich's port expansion is a unique project, both because of the area and the type of work needed. "This is a once in a career thing," said Pearson. "There haven't been a lot of wharf projects," added Kauffman. The public process, said Pearson, is not just limited to information meetings, especially in a town the size of Goderich. "A lot of people that know us will just come into the office and talk _to us," he said. "We've been around 60 years... if they have something like that to say, they come in (and say it)." An example of public input to action, he said, was the in- clnsion of North Harbour Road into the expansion plans.
