EDWARD
Madeleine E. (Lane)
Edward passed into the
arms of our Lord on
Wednesday, May
27, 2009,
peacefully and in
the comfort of
her home. In her
97th year,
Madeleine had a
full life of love
and devotion to
Qthers. As a "child
of the manse" and
predeceased by her loving
parents Rev. D.J. and Madeleine Lane, she was
raised in Cookstown, Grand Valley, Hanover
and Wallaceburg. After graduation from U. of
T. and .O.C.E. in 1933/34, she began teaching
high school in Goderich. She continued her
love of learning with a music degree from
Western Conservatory and Ontario 'specialist'
designations in English, Music and Phys Ed.
She was a natural teacher who encouraged all
she met to be the best they could be. Following
the war she retired to raise her family, but
returned to G.D.C.I. over the decades as a
supply teacher. This involvement with a new
generation - some of whom were children of
her, first students - was a joy to her. Teaching
english to "new Canadians" was the basis of
many special and enduring relationships. The
recipient of a number of awards for community
service, she was pleased to accept a medal
celebrating the 75th anniversary of her
graduation from U. of T. in 2008. Predeceased
in 1986 by- her devoted husband, Clayton. In
addition to raising their sons, they supported
one another in numerous activities; church,
civics and in the family fuel business.
Madeleine continued to be an active community
member until very recently. Madeleine is
survived by her sons David (Joan) of
Cambridge, Donald (Linda) of Goderich,
grandchildren Laurie, David, Daniel, Catherine
and Graham, great grandchildren Owen, Sierra,
Madelyn and nephew Peter Lane and family of
Montreal. Also predeceased by brother Donald
Lane. The family received friends at the
McCallum & Palla Funeral Home, Cambria
Rd. at East St., Goderich on Sunday 7-9 p.m.
and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service
was held at Knox Presbyterian Church,
Goderich, on Tuesday, June 2, 2009`at 11 a.m.
Rev. Bill Vanderstelt and Mary Jane Bisset
officiated. Eulogy was given by Mary Jane
Culley. Music was lovingly provided by the
Knox Chancel Choir and the MacKay
Choristers. Pallbearers were Laurie Edward,
David Edward, .Daniel Edward, Catherine
Edward, Graham Edward and Peter Lane.
Piper was Graham Edward. Interment Maitland
Cemetery. Donations to Knox Church,
Goderich, the IODE or the charity of your
choice gratefully acknowledged. Friends may
