The 29th annual Goderich Old -
Timers Soccer Tournament was a
heartbreaker for local fans as God-
erich lost the tournament champi-
onship by a last-minute goal scored
by competitors Windsor Caboto.
When the final whistle blew, the
score was 1-0 Windsor.
The June 6 tournament saw eight
teams take to the Bitch at Ag Park
to determine who had what it takes
to win it all.
The Caboto crew went undefeat-
ed for the entire tournament, with
wins against Windsor. ?ociaro (1-
0) and Hanover (2-0).
Goderich's previous ;games saw
the Oldtimers win 1-0 over. Exeter
and 1-0 over Toronto with penalty
shots.
Other divisional winners in-
cluded Owen Sound, who beat To-
ronto 2-0 in the 'AB' championship;
Ciociaro over Anchor Bay 2-1 in a
'BA' championship shoot-out; and
Exeter over Hanover in the BB'
championship.
The annual tournament draws
competitors from a wide area, with
teams coming from as close as Ex-
eter and as far away as Anchor Bay,
Michigan.
Goderich forward Mike Strick-
land, said that the day was a great
one to be on the pitch.
"We • had great fan support and
it was a terif': day weather-wise,
other than a eoid breeze," he said.
"It was justbeautiful day to be
playing soccer."
Strickland also said Goderich's
near -win was the best showing the
Oldtimers have had in a number of
years.
"When you beat a solid club like
Toronto, youknow you're doing
something right," he said.
Goderich's Gregg DeWinter was
awarded the Vic Alexander Most
Sportsmanlike Player trophy, for
his exemplary conduct on the pitch
thraughoit..the tournament.
The trophyis decided by the ref-
--erees and coach of the most sports-
manlike team - the referees choose
the team, and the coach of that team
chooses the player who best em-
bodies the attribute.
The Oldtimers also donate part
of their entry fees to a local cause
each year and tournament chair,
Dave Newman, decided to donate
the 2009 proceeds to the.Goderich
Relay For Life.
Next year will be the 30th an-
niversary of the tournament, and
Strickland explained things will
be a bit bigger and more extrava-
gant. The team is possibly looking
at hospitality options, as well as
entertainment, but the tournament
will remain'an eight -team format.
"Eight teams is about the maxi-
mum to get it all done in one day
without starting too early, going too
late, or having too many games,"
Strickland said.
In its' current incarnation the
tournament has teams playing the
equivalent of a game -and -a -half
over three matches.
