The Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-06-10, Page 21ALS walk raises more than $15 000 signal -star staff The first annual ALS (also known as Lou Gherrig's Disease) Walk was held this past weekend in Goderich, and organizer Nicki Darbyson explained that the event was a huge success, surpassing their estimates and their goals. "We definitely surpassed our goal," she explained. "Being the first year, we weren't sure what to expect, but we were aiming for $10,000 raised." They hit that goal one and a half times over by the end of the walk though. More than 120 wallcers participated, rais- ing $15,136 to help find a cure for ALS. Next year they will be hoping for warmer weather, a higher goal and more people, but this years start was phenomenal. "Lots of people came out, and we were very happy with the way it went this year." The walk came about as a way for Darby - son to help a family member who was diag- nosed with the dise.e in January. ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Scle- rosis, a rapidly progressing, fatal neuromus- cular disease. The degeneration of certain nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord cause the progressive loss of vol- untarily muscle movement. Most cases prove fatal when chest muscles are no longer able to help the lungs breath. ACW council gets prepped for PRISM Denny Scott signal -star staff Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh is now under the watchful eye of the PRISM system, which will enable emergency, information to be made available to residents much quicker. PRISM, which stands for Protective Response Interactive Services Man- agement, is a system that uses digital locations, and a phone number data- base to get a recorded message out to individuals affected by disasters or ad- verse situations. David Lew, Emergency Medical Services Manager for the County ex- plained to ACW's Township Council that the system, was programmed by Quinte West, an Ontario town north df Trenton. He explained that buying the system was an easy decision, as it was both local, and the only system that is known to work. The h the system is the abil- ity to make multiple calls at once, with multipleione lines used to deliver the same Message. After the message is played, listen- ers will be asked if they understood the message, and if not, aid will be sent from the proper emergency ser- vice. Lew explained that this would cut down dramatically on costs, as normally they have to deliver this in- formation manually. Pei, can be used to report any number of situations, including boiled -water advisories, amber alerts, adverse weather conditions, chemi- cal spills, road closures, and can be applied more commercially as well. Lew explained that essential _ ser- vices, like the hospital, could easily reach their entire employment base to try and find replacements during an emergency. The system was paid for out of the county tax' levy, and cost $85,000, and will be launched in November. Lew. explained that townships need to circulate forms for residents to register with the system, so they can be made aware of po- tentially dan- gerous situa- tions Nothing Works Like Oieuilty ;;Carpet & Upholstery Gleaning M -DRY IS DRIER.
