establish new strategies and actions - as well as support,
enhance and sustain existing County, municipal and sec-
tor strategies. Each of the nine municipalities will be ex-
amined in relation to the sectors and the economic oppor-
tunities identified - and sector -specific, municipal -specific
and County -wide recommendations will be made.
Following the announcement of Volvo's closure last
fall, the Goderich and District Chamber of Commerce
formed a group of industry leaders known as "Growth for
Goderich" to start examining ways for better cross -sector
collaboration. Running concurrently with this process, the
County and the Huron Business Development Corporation
were working with the Ontario Ministry of Economic De-
velopment to apply for Communities in Transition fund-
ing for a number of sector and municipal projects. One of
the major projects to receive approval from the Ministry
was the county -wide blueprint strategy. The sector -driven
approach and deliverables of the blueprint were aligned
with the mandate of the Growth for Goderich group. The
group was also in agreement that a county -wide approach
was important, and as such, a recommendation was made
to name the June 11 event "Growth for Our Future."
Laura Herman, chair of the board of the Goderich and
District Chamber of Commerce says, "we initiated the
Growth for Goderich group knowing that it was important
to bring all sectors around one table to have discussions
and share information, and now this one -day event will
also bring -geography together which is also part of mov-
ing forward and working together to come up with ideas
and solutions to help with local economic development."
Senior Economic Development Officer for Huron
County Mike Pullen said, "it is important that the process
for the new Economic Development Opportunities Blue-
print be both sector -driven and municipally -driven to en-
sure the coordination and alignment of private sector op-
portunities with public sector policy and infrastructure."
Pullen added that "the importance of municipal and cross -
sector cooperation will be a major focus of the event and
will be one of the key messages of the keynote speaker,
Ian Hill."
Hill is recognized for being a catalyst for positive change
in communities throughout North America.
The June 11 event is just the beginning of the develop-
ment of the new Opportunities Blueprint Strategy. Subse-
quent industry and municipal consultations will occur to
farther explore and develop the ideas and concepts that
are identified at the Growth for Our Future event.
"An important part of this process will be to ensure that
the final blueprint strategy contains short-range and long-
range actions that are viable and can be implemented,"
says Pullen. "The strategy will examine all aspects of the
county and be mindful of national and global economic
trends to ensure that Huron County is well positioned to
tap into new and emerging opportunities.
