Symphony looking for lodging
This summer, the Port of Goderich wel-
comes a new and exciting musical event, the
American Wind Symphony Orchestra July
11 and 12.
This unique floating stage, aboard Point -
Counterpoint 11, will begin its North Ameri-
can tour in Erie, Pennsylvania in mid June
and then make its way along the Great Lakes,
visiting ports in Windsor, Port Stanley, Sault
Ste. Marie and then Goderich's main beach.
Owned by Robert Boudreau, Point -Coun-
terpoint II, will be anchored in Goderich from
Thursday, July 9 to -Sunday, July 12, with the
American Wind Symphony Orchestra per-
forming classical music on the waterfront in
two concerts. This one-of--a-kind vessel also
acts as a floating art gallery and patrons will
be offered a treat for the eye as well as the ear.
During its stay, the art gallery on board will
feature the work of two Goderich artists.
The silver vessel, 195 feet long and 38 feet
wide was .designed by renowned architect
Louis I. Kahn and in addition to the central
stage, added an art gallery and small theatre.
Over the 52 years the American Wind
Symphony Orchestra has been performing, it
has been responsible for the development of
thousands of young musicians from around
the world who will be billeted with local resi-
dents -during their four-day visit.
The orchestra's audience is encouraged to
bring folding chairs to the waterfront event
and watch in fascination as the shell of the
orchestra's floating arts centre opens and
the music begins. From that point, there is a
shared musical experience between audience
and performers that is remembered for many
years.
The town hatl an opportunity hack in
Mai -ch to hook the orchestra on its 2(X)9 tour
and with the financial hacking of COL'ncil an(l
a commitment from a small committee of
community volunteers, Goderich was added
to the Point -Counterpoint II summer tour.
Goderich tourism manager, Bob Marshall
believes the musical event will draw as many
as 4,500 to 5,000 visitors from the area of
.London north to Owen Sound.
The town had to commit $30,000 to bring
the symphony here on its tour and Coun. Ray
Hurd explained that council chipped in with
$5,000 to get the project moving.
"We anticipate revenue from this event of
up to $10,000 and it can be then used for beach
and waterfront improvements," he said. "The
tickets are priced at $10 and it represents good
value. People can bring their lawn chaiis, the
Lions will provide parking on site and we will
have shuttles operating at various mix's."
The orchestra is comprised of young mu-
sicians up to age .30 from various countries
around the world.
"These young musicians are grad students
or young people who work with orchestras.
They are from the United States, Columbia
and the Orieint who audition for the tour,"
Wanda Keith, special events coordinator said.
"This will be an exciting event for the town
and the 45 musicians will be billeted with
local families. We're matching them with
young musicians in the community."
Tourism Goderich is offering a number
of promotional packages to businesses and
residents to help .finance the event. Patrons
can purchase five different packages offering
program publicity, preferred seating for the
concert, transportation and vessel tours. One
package even offers a private concert by the
orchestra at the patron's choice of venue.
