Weekend walk organizers overwhelmed by support
To the Editor; .
On June 6th, Goderich held the first
annual Walk for ALS. It was a great suc-
cess, raising over $15,000 for research
and an equipment exchange program.
The Darbyson and Rompf families
would like to thank everyone for coming
out on Saturday and for their fundraising
efforts.
We would also like to thank the fol-
lowing local businesses for donating
refreshments and door prizes to the
event: Baileys, Balloons To You,
Blockbuster, Cravings, Gardiners,
Greyhaven Nurseries, Heather Gorman,
MicroAge Basics, Pharma Plus, Shoppers
Drugmart, Tim Hortons, Thomas

Tank should be on The Square
To the Editor;
After viewing some of the D -Day
anniversary on television, it occurred
to me that I hadp't noticed the Sherman
Tank outside the museum.
I took a drive up North Street and
couldn't see it.
I had to drive up Trafalgar Street to
find it hidden by a huge bush!
Why is this magnificent piece of his-
tory not on prominent display? Do the
operators of the museum not know
how instrumental the Sherman Tank
was in the liberation of Europe?
This tank should be proudly dis-
played on The Square alongside the
cenotaph for future generations to
view.
Millions of men and women fought
and far too many died for our freedom.
To hide the Sherman in an alcove
behind a bush is shameful. What is
next? Placing a bush beside it so it
can't be seen from Trafalgar Street?
I challenge all veterans,_ Legion
members, members of our Dutch com-
munity, interested citizens, Goderich
town council and Huron County coun-
cil to place this proud symbol of vic-
tory and freedom in a setting far more
fitting than its present location.
Let us do the honourable thing and
correct this injustice now.
Respectfully,
Richard Graham

Canadian Geese column informative
To the Editor,
Last week's Letter to the Editor from
Patricia Brown about Cathy Cove's arti-
cle regarding Canadian Geese missed the
point entirely. She accuses Cove of mis-
placed hysteria about the dangers of
Canada Geese. The' article does not
come across as hysterical in its facts and
I found it informative in regards to the
town's recent bylaw '76. I was unaware
that it is illegal to feed the geese in
Goderich. Feeding wild animals includ-
ing Canada geese encourages them to
stay in an .area, often against their natural
migratory patterns. Brown is somewhat
correct about the word "misplaced" in
that "Canada geese are not carriers of
microorganisms (pathogens) that signifi-
cantly threaten public health" (Weiner et
al'., Applied and Environmental
Microbiology, Aug. 1979, p258). Canada
geese feces, however, often contain para-
sites such as cryptosporidia that can
cause serious bowel symptoms. Children
are more at risk because they usually
play directly on the beach where geese
may have been. (Health Services at
Columbia University, April 28, 2008) I,
for one, appreciate the well -researched
articles that Cove presents about various
local issues .that are not covered other-
wise by the paper.
Sincerely,

Business promotes physical acivtity
To the Editor;
I read, with interest, your articles of
May 27, 2009, concerning Huron County
resident's use of down time for exercise
and the quiet debate about automobile
traffic on The Square. Over half of
Huron's residents incorporate exercise
into their downtime! Some of these
people support non -motorized use of
The Square by participating in the bicy-
cle initiative Ride of the Town Limit
sponsored by Coffee Culture. Initiatives
by local business to increase activity and
sociability of town residents can lead to
business opportunities.
Let's all- support Coffee Culture in
their leadership by riding the town limit!
. In doing so, you will meet neighbours
who share your interest in staying
healthy. You will make our Square is a
more vibrant people place. Perhaps other
BIA members will be motivated to inno-
vate!
