Box 220, 120 Huc•kins Street, Goderieh, Ontario N7A 4B6 EDITORIAL Celebration of war heroes significant for all Perhaps one of the last great gatherings of our nation's war heroes took place in France on the weekend .as thousands gathered on the sandy beaches near Juno to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the landing of the allies on Normandy. It was significant to mark the events of 65 years ago when our brave sol- diers eagerly fought and died on the beaches of Normandy, so that the prin- ciples of democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law could rightly be protected and saved for generations. On June 4, 1944, Canadian and allied soldiers landed on Juno Beach, an eight -kilometre stretch of sand and tiny fishing villages, was the place where 14,000 soldiers of the 3rd Canadian Infantry division battled their way ashore against fierce resistance from 7,000 Germans of the 716th Infantry Division who had dug themselves in on the beaches. The fearless and brave landing left 359 Canadian soldiers dead and 715 wounded. It was a day of death, injury, horror and indomitable Canadian spirit and bravery. Our men distinguished themselves again. It was a turning point in the Second World War and again, it was the brave • young men from Canada who battled their way onshore. It may be one of the last gatherings of some our nation's freedom fighters. Let us not forget the sacrifices for we enjoy the ultimate fruits of freedom and choice. D.S. Tourism an important economic driver in Huron Tourism is important business in our county and communities. And as the summer season now kicks into a higher gear, a schedule of events in communities across the county will begin to • unfold and attract visitors to the charm and beauty of the area. This may be a watershed year for tourism not only in Canada and Ontario, but the region of southwestern Ontario, as a confluence of events may force people to economize and consider inexpensive outings. _ The economy and loss of jobs will definitely have an impact on tourism as people will look for cheaper fortes of entertainment and will likely travel closer to home. That may work well for our local tourism industry as people rediscover local fairs, professional theatre, festivals and community events. There is so much to do -and see in the Huron County area and it offers an inexpensive way to spend time with the family. Huron County boasts more than 85 km of shoreline along the sparkling waters of Lake Huron and offers visitors chaining countryside communities with treasured Victorian -era homes and impressive commercial buildings along broad main streets. While there is much for the visitor to see and do in our county, tourism is an important economic driver, providing student and seasonal employment and contributing more than $6 billion in tax revenues. Tourism businesses tepresent 23 per cent of all Ontario small and 'um -sized enterprises and the industry employs three per cent of the total tabour force in theP rovince. Tourism is important to the economy ofouk towns and county. Rediscover what the region has to offer this summer and share the beauty and convivial atmosphere of Huron with others. We must all become ambassadors for Huron. D.S. Looming festival in need of volunteers To the Editor: As with the rest of the world, it has been a time of challenges for the Goderich Children's Festival which will take place on June 27. At the begin- ning of this year, the fate of the festival was in question because we couldn't get enough plan- ning committee members. Thankfully some great ladies have stepped up and we are benefitting from new blood and new ideas. Although we greatly appreciate all the donations we have received, we have been challenged in this area as well. However, with little more than two weeks to go, we are finding our biggest challenge cur- rently is with a lack of volunteers and so we come to our community once more. This year is the eighth Goderich Children's Festival and our theme is Science Rocks! Mad Science will be doing science demonstrations and we have other activities planned around a rock star theme. All activities are free of charge.
