In just his second fight, 14 -year-old Alex Vodden may have taken more punches than he gave, but at the end, he was still standing and looking forward to his next match. Both Vodden and Natalie Grguric took part in the Golden Tiger Stars of the Future fight night Saturday in Hanover. Vodden came out strong off the bell each round, landing some hard blows on his op- ponent, but quickly ran out of gas as the fight wore on. Still, this rookie Goderich fighter packed quite a punch, busting up his opponent's nose early on and finding the mustard to deliver a few hard hooks to the face whenever he got against the ropes. "Painful. Really painful," was all he had to say after the match. Vodden lost the fight in a 3-0 judges' decision. Grguric was up against Heather Stew- art out of Boomerz in London. Stewart won the match in a unanimous decision, much to the dismay of coach Kirk Killam. "I thought maybe a split decision," he said. "tut (Grguric) got her good." Stewart had the longer reach, making Gr- guric go in tight if she wanted to land any- thing hard. The Goderich fighter did just that for a few body blows in the second and third rounds. Much of the fight, blows were literally exchanged, as the two boxers seemed to throw the same punch simultaneously. Even though the decision went to her opponent, Grguric said it was a positive night. "It was a pretty good fight," she said. "I'm improving every time and that's what I care about." The fighters will be looking to get back in the ring in June at Boomerz in London. Top I e f t , Natalie Grguric (red) and Heather Stewart exchange blows.
