Beach keen
Last Thursday's temperatures near the 30s brought
many out to Goderich Main Beach to soak up the sun,
build castles in the sand or just cast off. Above, Jordan
Martens of London came to town to try his luck off the
main beach pier. Right, four-year-old Abby Ward of
Kitchener -Waterloo's secret to a good sand castle?

Health Unit aims to reduce
pedestrian - traffic injuries
Eighty-one pedestrians visited Hu-
ron County emergency rooms because
they were injured in a traffic -related
incident from 2003
' to 2007. The Hu-
ron County Health
Unit wants to see
that number re-
duced.
Public Health
Promoter Lyndsay
Snowe says as the
weather warms up,
more people are
getting outside and
being active.
"It's great to
be active, but be
safe. Roadways
can pose a risk to
pedestrians using
them to walk, run
or cycle," Snowe
says, "injuries arc
predictable and
preventable. As a
pedestrian, take
responsibility for
your own safety."
The health unit is part of a cam-
paign, launched by the Southwest In-
jury Prevention Network, encourag-
ing pedestrians to take the precautions
necessary to Be Safe and Be Seen
while outdoors.
The health unit advises when you're
being active outdoors; take them:tips to
keep you and your family safe.
• Make sure that you are visible to
• motorists,
• Wear tight or bright coloured clothes
at dusk, night, and low -light times.
• Wear reflective gear, such as a reflec-
tive arm band,
• When you're taking the dog tor a
walk, kap your reactive arm band with
your pet's bash so it is a visible reminder
'to wear it.
• When you're cycling, use the ap-
propriate lights and reflectors on your
bike, By law your bicycle must have a
white front light and a red rear light; and
white reflective tape on the front forks
and red reflective tape on the rear.
• Wear a helmet every time you ride.
In order to be safe
when being active
outdoors, you need
to be seen by mo-
torists.
"Getting out and
being physically
active is key to a
healthy life. We4r-
ing the right cloth-
ing and appropri-
ate equipment will
keep you safe,"
says Snowe.
In Ontario's
southwest region
over the last five
years, 2.52 pedes-
trians have been se-
verely injured,
The South West
injury Prevention
Network is a col-
laboration of com-
munity partners,
including the Eluron County llcalth
Unit, that are dedicated to prevent-
ing injuries and raising awareness
for safe and healthy activities.
