Agreement reached
Bylaw 54 authorizing the site plan agreement for 45 Nelson passed its third and final reading from
Goderich council Monday night, after weekend mediations between concerned residents and Maple
Tree Community Housing Corporation wrapped up Saturday. The children's play area will be located
to the east of the building and fencing will be five feet high along the west side at the expense of
Leslie Cudmore. and east and north sides of the property at the expense of Maple Tree. A joint com-
mittee will be established to monitor the construction activities and other operations.

Huron leads in food and water illness

Step away from the donut, and the
after-dinner cigarette.
That was part of the news delivered
by Shelly -Ann Hall, epidemiologist
for Huron County, during a May 19 .
presentation on the Community Health
Status Report at the county's second
committee -of -the -whole session.
Thanks to a consultative Process,
which involved interviewing a number
of county residents as well as collect-
ing statistics in a variety of related ar-
eas, the fiat -of -its -kind report unveils
most of what ails Huron County.
And a lot of it,' suggests the report,
involves one too many trips to the all -
you -can -eat buffet .given that 36 per
cent of county residents are deemed
either overweight or obese.
To add to that is the sobering fact
that 47 per cent of county residents
acknowledge they don't bother to ex-
ercise during downtime.
One thing that 50 per cent of county
residents do take on, however, is high-
risk drinking.
Indeed, says Hall, the county's
youth go further than their provincial
counterparts in participating in binge
drinking, which is considered to be
imbibing more than five drinks in one
session.
Though county residents report
lower stress levels than their provin-
cial counterparts there are other areas
- including a high rate (64 per cent) of
households on private septic systems

that could prove to give the county a
bellyache if there was a problem with
groundwater. In fact, report statistics
reveal there are more food and water-
borne -related illnesses in this region
than in the province as a whole.
What was most compelling to Hall
is the high number of smog advisories
in Huron -Perth.
"What was surprising to me at least
.•. is the similar number of smog advi-
sories in Huron -Perth as there were in
Toronto."
Still, the life expectancy in Huron
County is similar to Ontario, with a
median age of 76 for men and 81 for
women.
The leading causes of death in the
• county, notes Hall, include heart dis-
ease, strokes anI cancer.
Hall says the next step in the process
is for the Huron County Health Unit
to begin addressing ways in which
to encourage county residents to live
healthier lifestyles. She notes getting
that message out might be easier than
one might expect given that 25 per
cent of county residents report feeling
a strong sense of community, a figure
that is much higher than what is found
at the provincial level.
