off 2009 tourist season
The Goderich Farmers' and
Flea Markets made their trium-
phant return to Courthouse Park
on the weekend, when hordes of
residents and visitors descended
upon the downtown core.
The long weekend kicked -off
the start to the area's bustling
warmer season, which will see
many more festivals and events
take place downtown.
Next weekend brings the an-
nual Kirken 0' The Tartan service
at Knox.
Whether you believe it to be 60,
250, or over one thousand years
in the making, the Kirkin' 0' The
Tartan service will be celebrating
its fifteenth anniversary in Goder-
ich on May 31 at 11:00 a.m.
The Scottish service provides
a time to celebrate the origins
of Scottish clans and families. A
colour parade will begin at The
Square at approximately 10:30
a.m. Accompanied by the Celtic
Blue Highlanders, the banner -
carriers will make their way to
Knox Church for the service.
This year's service will see four
new Tartans, with 44 tartans in to-
tal, and Mary -Jane Bisset will be
leading the service.
Tartans go as far back as three
centuries, and that they were in-
dicative of the work that the fam-
ily they represented did.
Clan colours would be created
using vegetables from the clan or
families garden, and the fabric
would be created from the wool
of the clan's sheep. This linked
them to their homes no matter
where they travelled.
