YMCA grounds tobacco free
Gerard Crease
signal -star staff
As of Friday, May 15, smokers have
to get their butts off Maitland Recre-
ation Centre property.
The new tobacco -free policy was
enacted last week, covering the fields,
sidelines and parking lots of the MRC.
It does not cover the parking lot be-
hind Suncoast Mall.
The decision to go smoke-free was an
easy one, according to YMCA staff. •
"Our organization is based on build-
ing healthy kids, strong communities
and strong families," said Jane Dawson.
"This just seemed like a way we could
encourage healthy living."
Picking up on an ever-increasing
movement away from tobacco, Dawson
said this also encompasses the non -
smokable varieties.
"Tobacco free means no smoking,
snuffing, dipping or chewing tobacco by
coaches, players, parents and officials,
spectators," she said. "It was something
we wanted to take the initiative on."
Working together with the Huron
County Health Unit, Dawson said Mai-
tland staff made use of the HCHU's re-
source materials and guidelines before
coming up with a butting -out timeline.
Public awareness of the no -tobacco
shift was done through fact sheets,
newspaper advertisements, announce-
ments to teams and even in staff train-
in"(We) tried to sort of cover all of our
bases;' Dawson said.
Those found breaking the rule will be
warned and eventually, asked to leave if
.,tobacco use persists.
what's as far as we've gone at this
point," Dawson said. "We will be look-
ing for feedback on how the policy can
be changed to be more effective."
.In the. meantime, smokers will have
to take their last hauls before getting to
the MRC or they could get hauled out.
