Approximately every minute of every
day, someone in Canada needs blood.
According to a recent poll by Canadian
Blood Services, 52 per cent of Canadians
say they, or a family member, have needed
blood or blood products for surgery or for
medical treatment. Giving is important —
it could be the difference between life and
death for many.
That's why the CBS honoured 11 area
donors on May 13 for giving a collective
625 units of their own crimson juice.
Canadian Blood Services held its elev-
enth annual Donor Recognition Ceremo-
ny, Honouring Our Lifeblood, in London
last week, where residents of Goderich,
Clinton and surrounding areas were recog-
nized for their support.
Among the 11, Goderich donor Dale
Baechler was honoured for his 100th unit
donation. Gary Garniss, Jane Kerr, and
Earnest MacDougall each gave 75 units,
while Lawrence Baer, Edward Craig,
Linda MacDonald, Myles Murdock, Ed-
ward Plasschaert, Judith Stuart and Daniel
Stutzman of Auburn donated 50 units.
The annual event honoured those who
have given stem cells or bone marrow, or
milestone donations of 50 to 800 units of
blood, plasma or platelets.
Featured speaker at the event was Renee
Simmons whose daughter Stephanie has
survived three brain tumours with the help
of blood and platelet transfusions.
The 541 people honoured have donated
a total of 51,000 units of blood and blood
products.
Certificates of congratulations will also
be awarded to individuals and organiza-
tions including London Police Services.
