At a banquet held on Saturday, May 9, the Pirates recognized the efforts of key players and staff that brought them to where they were in the post season. Dave Meriam lead the charge for the night, taking home the Most Valu- able Player award, as well as being the team scoring leader with 35 points in 20 games. General manager Trevor Bazinet ex- plained that Meriam's efforts weren't just noticed locally. "Dave finished tied for seventh in the Southern division [of the Senior 'A' league], and was the only player to finish in the League's top 15 from the south," Bazinet explained. Shawn Burton was given the Most Sportsmanlike award, which was no UCH surprise, •according to Bazinet, as he was given the same honour by the league. Kyle Hamilton took home most dedi- cated, while Mike Gillen was honoured with top defenseman and rookie of the year. Most improved went to goaltender Ryan Shelton, and Matt MacPhee was awarded playoff MVP. The Pirates are already looking to next season, with their training camp scheduled to start on Friday, Septem- ber 11, 8 p.m. to 9:30 at the Maitland Junior, senior spring skating results in for the 2009 season Skaters from area clubs including, Goderich, Clinton, Brussels, Wingham, and Blyth tested their skating skills, dance, elements, free skate, and inter- pretive dance at the YMCA and local arenas after several weeks of Spring Skating Schools. "And we'll probably have some exhibition games set up to, but we won't know that until we set our season in July." The Pirates are looking for talent both on and off the ice according to Bazinet, as Daryl Parsons won't be the equipment manager for the team any- more. Parsons deserves thanks from the team, according to Bazinet, as he's worked for the Pirates for years, even bringing his wife in who worked on the executive and helped with tickets. Other positions that need to be filled include someone to man the soundboard and play music during the game.
