Mark Becker Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer it Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Senior girls sitting second in 'AA' high school soccer Gerard Creces signal -star staff Goderich District Collegiate Institute senior girls coach Ray Lewis said this year's team is looking good at the mid- season point, sitting tied for second in the league after St. Mike's of Stratford. "We're scrapping our way through it," Lewis said. "The girls are 'AA' this year so that changes things a little bit." The population -based rankings mean Goderich will 'be up against Nigger schools like Stratford, where the draw is much larger. However, that doesn't deter Lewis or the girls from their goal this season - to advance to the Western Ontario Second- ary School Athletic Association (WOS- SAA) finals. "We have to finish in the top three to get to WOSSAA," Lewis said. "If we can go three for four, we'd be okay." While Lewis lost a starting line with graduating players last year, he said the team is still poised for a good showing in the standings. "We lost, of course, a couple of key vets last year," he said. "But our team is pretty much in tact for another year. "The rookies we brought up this year are excellent." The girls were in Exeter Monday, and travelled to F.E. Madill in Wingham Tuesday. Game results were unavailable as of press time. Lewis said any apprehension the girls had about moving up to a higher divi- sion were more of a mental thing, add- ing the Vikings are doing just fine hold- ing their own against larger schools. However, it is largely the same team that went undefeated last year, he said. Part of their success is their ability to play all over the field. Net -minder Shannon Vance shut out St. Anne's in the first half of the Vikes' 6-0 win last week, only to come out of the net and score a hat -trick in the sec- ond half. That kind of balance, Lewis said, is evident all through the team. The Vikes were at 4-0-2 at press time, and Lewis predicted a bit of a log -jam in the standings between St. Marys, St. Mikes and Stratford Northwestern. However, with the other three top teams all having to face each other in the regular season's final two weeks, there should be some separation in the rankings. "The good thing is, we've played two of those teams," he said. "They all have to play each other. Those losses and ties should help us out." Meanwhile, many of last year's grad- uated players will be back in Goderich this summer as Lewis gets the Blaze fired up. 'We've got for the most part, our returning high school OFSAA team," he said. "Pretty much everybody who played OFSAA for high school is back in Blaze." That includes Briget Jeffray, who in her first year of varsity soccer is already on the starting line for the University of Windsor. When it comes to soccer in Goderich, few people are as busy this time of year as Lewis. When not coaching high school or the Blaze, Lewis spends his time be- hind the U-1 1 bench, where they can be found Monday nights on the high school fields. U-1 1 game time is 7 p.m. Seabreeze win season opener The Goderich Seabreeze are back on the pitch for another season of ladies' soccer, and coach Tom Costello said the team is off to a good start with Sunday's 5-0 win over Kirkton. Anj McCool and Julie Gillam scored two each, with Nadine VandenHeuval adding the fifth and final goal for God- erich. Stephanie Dale took on goaltending duties for the first game of the year, and while she didn't see too much action, Costello said she did rise to the occa- sion whenever necessary. With a mix of players and ages be- tween 18-40+, Costello said there is a good mix of experienced vets and new talent on the team. The Seabreeze are part of the Lon- don and Area Women's Soccer League. Their next home game is May 24 against Lambeth. Game time is 5 p.m. / i , / ,moi/ Attention parents, coaches, players and fans: Want to see your team in the paper? Give us a call at 519-524-2614 ext, 251 or fax to 519-524-5145.
