High School students at Goderich
District Colligate Institute (GDCI)
began their quest for change last week.
From May 8 - 10 at the Sheridan College
campus in Oakville, half of the 40
Ontario Students Against Impaired
Driving (OSAID) GDCI club members
were chosen to participate in the annual
OSAID Conference along with 300
other dedicated high school students
from around Ontario.
The OSAID Conference was orga-
nized by the provincial student commit-
tee, which includes Jessica Adams,
GDCI gGade 12 student and four year
OSAID member.
From May 11 to the 15, GDCI is host-
ing many different activities to raise
awareness about impaired driving in
their school. Activities include a pan-
cake breakfast on Thursday, May 14 and
a raffle draw on Friday, May 15.
"Education and raising awareness
is the most important tool for lower-
ing the statistics of impaired colli-
sions in our community" Jessica
Adams explained, "The activities tak-
ing place at our school involve a lot
of education for students."
On May 11, Don Bushell, who is
now a paraplegic as a result of a col-
lision while driving under the influ-
ence, spbke to the students at GDCI.
The 40 OSAID members are a dedi-
cated and passionate group of stu-
dents trying to educate their genera-
tion on impaired driving and its dev-
astating effects.
Proposal calls for attack

Finally, the mayors would like to work
together with the provincial and federal
governments on economic studies to de-
velop business and drive investments in
the Great Lakes.
"There has to be a measure of investment
on the Great Lakes," Shewfelt said. "We
know the value of commerce on the Great
Lakes and we have to get governments in-
volved to build investment."
The mayors' initiative stemmed from a
new collaborative process between Ontario
municipalities and the provincial government
establishes under the Great Lakes Canada
Ontario Agreement memorandum of Coop-
eration (COAMOC). It was signed last year
to establish municipal -provincial dialogue on
Great Lakes issues of mutual interest.
strategy with a target date of 2015 to
have Ontario beaches open 80 per cent of
the swimming season.
The mayors' third proposal calls for
new attacks on nuisance and toxic algae
with a comprehensive algae -control plan
to reduce nutrient concentrations. Parts
of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Georgian
Bay are struggling with explosive growth
of algae.
The fourth point in the plan calls for a
significant reduction of untreated or inad-
equately treated sewage and contaminated
storm water being released into the Lakes.
The mayors are calling on the federal and
provincial governments to provide policy
guideline and technical and financial sup-
port to adopt new approaches and innova-
