Emma VanderWouden is kneeling in the centre holding two plants. Joining them are a happy band of
IODE members and volunteers.
IODE flower sale held for 17th year
For the 17th consecutive year, IODE Maple Leaf
Chapter in Goderich partnered with Te -Em Farm for
their "Flowers for the Future" Geranium Project.
It's an 'annual' story that plays itself out each year
on the Saturday before Mother's Day. With the gen-
erous support of Te -Em Farm, IODE members sell
premium quality geraniums to friends, family, co-
workers and neighbours in a win -win-win scenario.
The community's continued support of the proj-
ect beautifies local gardens; IODE members work
together building community; and profits are re -in-
vested in important community projects.
The promise of spring is a great excuse for IODE
members to contact friends and neighbours and the
'geranium sort' is a terrific social occasion. Not
even Saturday's unsettled weather could dampen
the spirits of this energetic group; while the skies
threatened and rain fell intermittently, the weather
didn't turn really nasty until the work was done!
Emma and Ted VanderWouden and the talented
growers at Te -Em Farm make this IODE fundrais-
er possible. The predictable quality of the Te -Em
Farm plants ensures delighted repeat customers,
with plants gracing local gardens as well as those
in Grand Bend, London, St. Thomas, Burlington,
Oakville and Scarborough. The 2009 sale set a new
record -- 2,967 plants. Emma joked "What an order!
If this continues, next year you will have to pre -or-
der so that we will have enough. Would Christmas
be early enough?"
The truth is that Emma pulls off a small miracle
each year. On the first Tuesday of May, geranium
sales are tallied at the IODE General Meeting by co -
convenors Emily Crew and Deb Baxter. Wednesday
morning, the order is placed and like clockworl-•,
by 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, the Te -Em Farm van and
trailer roll up to the IODE Consignment and Oppor-
tunity Shop at 202 Anglesea Street (at Albert) with
racks loaded to the roof — proof of another blooming
miracle!
If you missed this year's IODE geranium sale, no
need to despair, this order was just a small dent in
the Te -Em Farm geranium supply — one they antici-
pated. For more information on IODE visit www.
iode.ca/ or contact a local member.
On behalf of the Chapter, Co -convenors Emily
Crew and Deb Baxter would like to thank all those
who supported this record breaking campaign. To-
gether we are making our community a special place
to live, work and play one small miracle at a time.
