Sold locally by Kris Drudge at Kris's Car Care on Huron Road, e -bikes are a gas -free means of getting around, and Drudge wanted to bring them to her store as a means of ex- panding her business. The silent, electric vehicles, according to Volt Canada, a division of Green Technology Inc., are a carbon -neutral transportation op- tion, meaning that it .produces no carbon gas as a by-product of running. Automobiles that use internal combustion engines, by compari- son, produce carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide through incomplete combustion in the engine. The bipedal vehicles share more than just a wheel count with bikes, having pedals on the side if you're looking to save power for the ride home, or if you find yourself out of juice somewhere on the highway. Future models, according to information from Volt Canada, will be available with solar panels, "extend- ing your [ride distance] almost endlessly." Visitor to Kris's Car Care can step up to one of the vehicles and take. it for a short spin to understand the vehicle, and Drudge ex- plained that the technological leap forward is easy on all aspects of life. "[The e -bikes] charge over -night for about $0.10 to $0.20, and can go 80 to 100 kilome- tres depending on the driver," she explained, saying that a speed limit of 32 km an hour must be observed by drivers. That means that the vehicle can run for two and one-half to three and one-half hours on a single charge. The bikes aren't legally automotive ve- hicles, but do follow some rules, Drudge ex- plained. Drivers must wear a helmet and pas- sengers are prohibited, and they're banned from the 400 series highways. One big benefit to these vehicles is that they don't require insurance or a licence, meaning you can be driving as soon as your vehicle is powered up. She explained that this makes it great for teens. "You have to be 16 to drive them, but they are fantastic for the age group," Drudge said. They have headlights, blinkers, a horn, and two security systems, so parents can let their children take that job without having to drive them to and from work" The big selling feature of the vehicles is that they are inexpensive to run and to buy, with a price -tag between $1,299 to $2,399. Newer models boast the ability to be- ing able to climb inclines as high as 35- 40 degrees from a standing stop. Anyone interested in the e -bikes can visit Kris's Car Care at 230 Huron Road, or call 519-524-4777. Information is also available at www. voltcanada.ca.
