Local students look at armed forces recruitment

The Canadian Armed Forces will be
adding an additional 8,000 personnel
to its complement of soldiers and many
high school students are taking a serious
look at new career paths in the forces.
A member from the London Canadian
Forces Recruiting Centre was at God-
erich and District Collegiate Institute
(GDCI) Wednesday to speak to a career
class and 12 interested students who had
previously signed up for a formal pre-
sentation.
For Master Seaman Kevin Van Arnhem
who looks after recruiting in the London
district, visits to area high schools has
proved to be lucrative as more students
are aware of and interested in careers in
the military.
"We usually get out two times a year
and speak to career classes and provide
signup lists and in Goderich, 12 stu-
dents had signed up for a presentation,"
he said. "Recruitment in the London
area has been really good and we have
reached 112 per cent of our target. Tra-
ditionally, we've done well in the area."
Interest in a career in the forces has
also come from some non-traditional
sources as workers facing permanent
layoffs at Volvo have inquired about
employment.
"Our jobs just might suit them," Van
Arnhem said. "They have great skills to
offer."

pliment of 60,000 soldiers and there are
another 30,000 reservists spread across
the country.
"We want to get the forces to 100,000
and there's ,great need for vehicle techni-
cians, we're over 100 techs short in that
field and we need more intake in electron-
ics," Van Arnhem said adding that even ex-
perienced trades workers and technicians
would have to go through basic training.
Reserve units, which require a commit-
ment of one -day -a -week and one night of
service have attracted a number of young
people who can take advantage of an edu-
cation allowance of up to $2,000 ,per year
for four years.
Recruiters come to the Goderich lo-
cation of Service Canada once a month
and can provide information and an
application to any interested person.
An appointment must be booked in ad-
vance to speak to a recruiter.
