Emergency preparedness
underlined in Goderich
There is a great measure of comfort in knowing that in the event of an
emergency or a disaster, professionals in our community are prepared to
deal with any situation.
Last week was Emergency Preparedness Week in Ontario and local resi-
dents got an opportunity to meet local professionals involved in emergency
management and view their equipment up close at the annual First
Responders' Night. Emergency vehicles from OPP, EMS and the Goderich
Fire Department were on .display and there was representation from Red
Cross, Victim Services, Huron County Health Unit and Goderich Emergency
Management.
There is a wealth of trained personnel and valuable experience available
locally in the event of any kind of emergency. It's easy to take these profes-
sionals for granted because people • rarely require their services but they
invest a ICA training time to ensure that they Are prepared for every eventual-
ity and emergency.
Living in a mining town, emergency preparedness takes on a whole new
meaning. Unless a person is closely associated with the salt mine or its
employees, it's easy to have less than a passing knowledge of the skill,
training and level of expertise that our miners acquire in preparing to deal
with the prospect a mine disaster.
As was ably demonstrated in the regional Mine Rescue Competition held
here last week at the Memorial Arena, a group of local miners has been
systematically trained to deal with every kind of emergency that might be
experienced in a mining operation.
While the competition presented extreme and difficult scenarios to the
participating rescue teams, as Tim Taylor of the Mines and Aggregate Safety
and Health Association explained; "We work very hard at something we
hope we never have to do."
The mine rescue teams were put through a demanding and exacting simu-
lated exercise that emphasized their required attention to detail, meticulous
planning and ability to react and think quickly under the pressure.
Last year, our miners were tops and while they may not have placed first
in the most recent competition, it was evident at the simulated exercise, that
they are highly -trained and competent professionals with specialized skills.
Again it's comforting to know that the expertise is available and ready to
react to any situation.
Families should take note of their responsibility and take appropriate
action to be prepared for an emergency. Know the risks specific to your
region or area. Every household should have an emergency plan and every
member of the family .should know what to do in the event of an emergen-
cy.
Finally, families need to be prepared and that includes having some basic
supplies ready And available in case power and water were not available for
two or three days. Make sure you have food, water, blankets. a battery-
operated radio and a flashlight available where they are easy to find in a
powerless situation.
Emergency preparedness is a collective responsibility.
And preparedness is the key. Just like the mine rescue teams, people,
including families, have'to work at it and be ready. (DS)
