OPP take part in national safety week
All 165 Ontario Provincial Po-
lice detachments, including the
Huron OPP, are taking part in
the annual national Canada Road
• Safety Week campaign — Road
Safety Vision 2010 aimed at mak-
ing our roads and waterways the
safest in the world.
This year's campaign runs from
12:01 a.m. on May 12 to 11:59
p.m. on May 18.
The Canada Road Safety Week
campaign focus is on increasing
public compliance with safe driv-

ment action. The goal is to save
lives and reduce injuries on Can-
ada's highways and waterways
by aiming at the major causes of
deaths and injuries, specifically,
aggressive driving, impaired
driving, speeding and failing to
properly wear seatbelts. In Huron
County, officers will be targeting
drinking drivers, including those
out on Lake Huron, speeding
drivers, drivers who fail to stop at
stop signs and motorists who fail
to buckle up, to name a few.
Last year in Ontario, 322 peo-
ple were killed in crashes on
roads patrolled by the OPP. In
Huron County there were 11 fatal
crashes resulting in 13 deaths and
another 178 personal injury colli-
