Understanding youth mental
problems needs to be a priority
Children's Mental Health Ontario is rec-
ognizing Children's Mental Health Week
with a series of initiatives designed to
increase understanding of mental health
problems in children and youth across On-
tario. The Huron -Perth Centre is asking for
you to become involved in raising aware-
ness. Wear a green ribbon, participate in
our workplace awareness campaign - How
Long Must I Wait? - and attend our upcom-
ing Music for Mental Health concert to be
held on May 8 at Central United Church,
Stratford at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30
p.m., admission by free-will donation with
proceeds to benefit the work of the Huron -
Perth Centre.
The Huron -Perth Centre for Children
and Youth, the local accredited children
mental health centre, funded by the Min-
istry of Children and Youth Services over
1200 children, youth and their families
each year with various children's mental.
health services. While every effort is made
to respond to the needs of all requests, lim-
ited resources make it difficult 'to see ev-
eryone quickly and many must be placed
on a waiting list before services can begin.
The Huron -Perth Centre works in collabo-
ration with schools, doctors, and numerous
other professionals to address the needs of
children with mental concerns.
"At Huron -Perth Centre we are doing
what we can with the resources we have
to meet the mental health needs of chil-
dren and youth in Huron and Perth. But
we know that for every child we help
due to urgency of their needs there are at
least two who much wa' t. We are asking
people to become involved by. increasing
their understanding of mental health is-
sues, supporting family members, friends
and neighbors who may be struggling and
considering ways to support the work of
the Huron -Perth Centre." information on
all of thg ways you can help can be found
by visiting the Center's website at www,
hpcentre.on.ca to download information
provided for this year's CMH week.
Huron -Perth Centre is coordination its
efforts with Children's Mental Health
Ontario to raise awareness for children's
mental health locally and across the prov-
ince. "Everyone can become involved,"
says Douge Lester, Board President. "With
the knowledge that one in five children
between three and 17 will struggle with a
mental health issue at some time; we all
know one or more of these children - in our
families, in our circle of friends or in the
broader community. The 87 agencies rep-
resented by Children's Mental Health On-
tario continue to advocate for the need for
increased, stable funding to meet the grow-
ing needs for children across the province.
If ever there has been a time when resourc-
es are needed it is now."
Wearing a green ribbon is a simple way
to indicate concern for the issue. Reducing
stigma for mental health issues is a power-
ful way to support those who struggle with
an issue of anxiety, depression, or other
mental health issues that makes it difficult
for children and youth to function and feel
accepted.
The Workplace Awareness Campaign
"How Long Must I Wait?" offers informa-
tion on the extent of the problem and ways
people can help. By sharing information
about children's mental health we take a
private struggle and make it a matter of
public concern.
The May 8 concert, Music for Mental
Health promises to offer a range of musi-
cal talents from individual performances
from the Brad Canning, Kim and Sarah
Souch, Caitlin Robb, Nicole VanMas-
senhoven, Jim Ryan, Betty Beer, Linda
Murray, Terri Sparling and two bands, the
JanZen Band and Different Stages. The
event will offer a range of musical genres 3
including folk, country, soft rock, blues
provided by the generosity of local musi-
cians. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with start
time scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Central
United Church, 194 Avondale Stratford.
