"It's to get kids out, get them active and get them confident," says Grguric as the timer sounds off on another round of sparring. "And show that boxing isn't as bad as people may think" There is much more to the sport than just slugging jt out, she says. Students leam to win, lose and eat properly, both before a fight and in day-to-day situations. "And I make 'em sweat," she laughs. "I promised their parents." Vodden is living proof of this. The junior welterweight is tired, and short for words about his Golden Gloves experience. "You really don't notice all the people around you," he says, catching his breath. "Just the person punching me." Both Grguric and Vodden went straight to the gold medal match, as they were the only other competitors in their weight class. Unfortunately for Vodden, he was mis-matched against Jay Newbe- ginnings of Hanover. "We were told he was in the gym for eight months before the fight," says Killam as training resumes. "We weren't told about the two years previous." After a shaky rise from an eight -count, referees called the fight off. Even though it didn't end on a gold note, Vodden was back in the gym almost immediately, and will be joining Grguric on the bill for May 24. As the boxers get back to their training, a call comes on Grguric's phone. It's a promoter from Hanover with the confirmation of fighters for the coming bouts. As Killam begins listing names, weights and ages over the phone, it's clear this interview is over. It's time to start sweating.
