Flu scare cause for caution
The stakes were simply too high not to do anything.
Caution became the operative word around the world this past week as more and
more people became infected with the H 1 N 1 flu virus, commonly known as the swine
influenza or swine flu.
And so it was a prudent move made by the World Health Organization (WHO) to
quickly develop a vaccine in response to the outbreak.
While many consider the reaction to be overwhelmingly cautious, it is far better for
health organizations and officials to take a cautious approach than face a pandemic
and the possibility of large numbers of deaths.
Swine influenza is a strain of the influenza virus that usually affects pigs but can
also make people sick. Human swine influenza is a respiratory illness that causes
symptoms similar to those of the regular human seasonal flu. The symptoms include
fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, coughing and sore throat.
The virus is contagious 'and can be spread from person to person, in the same way
as regular seasonal influenza.
Influenza is spread through droplets that have been coughed or sneezed into the air
by someone who is already infected. The virus is also found on the hands of people
with the flu and on surfaces they have touched. Crowded conditions play increase the
risk of infection and attending events with large gatherings may increase your chance
of getting the flu.
While the cases reported in Canada and Ontario have been determined to be of the
mild variety, precautions are critical to prevent the spread of the virus and flu.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm -running water. Alcohol -based
hand gel can also be used. -
Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette. Don't sneeze into your hand. Cover
your mouth and nose by sneezing or coughing into your elbow, arm or sleeve and
wash your hands afterward.
Keep shared surface areas clean. Clean doorknobs, telephones, keyboards and other
hard surfaces that many people touch on a regular basis.
Get vaccinated against seasonal influenza. The flu shot can prevent illness in about
70 to 90 percent of healthy people.
Locally, officials at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital are following protocol
and guidelines of the provincial ministry of health and the Huron County Health
Unit.
. To date there have been no reported cases of the flu in the Goderich area but a few
patients have shown up at the hospital to have symptoms checked.
If you experience flu-like symptoms, you should talk to a healthcare professional.
Precaution is the operative word and people should not take health lightly. (DS)
Set aside time with mom
There's nothing quite so caring or comforting as the loving touch of a mother.
This Sunday, is Mother's Day, a day set aside to acknowledge all the moms for their
nurturing, support and unconditional love.
They are the world's greatest teachers; teachers of compassion, forgiveness,
patience, trust and builders and protectors of souls and self esteem.
A mother is the truest teacher and friend we can have and her undying support and
kindness, counseling and understanding dissipate the dark clouds of life.
Mothers are sunshine and a safe refuge.
Moms are the best. Be sure to give your mother a call this weekend and offer a
genuine thank you for her unselfish, lifelong efforts.
Or go and share the day with mom. Those days are precious and will one day be
only fond memories. (DS)
