It's the second year for rugby at God -
erica District Collegiate Institute and
though there are .no wins to report, the
junior boys managed to score their first
try against Mitchell last week, courtesy
of John Rutledge.
"It's ,another step forward for us,"
said coach Steve Lindstrom. "With our
team, we're just working on the funda-
mentals so far."
Lindstrom coaches both the boys and
• girls teams, and said the commitment
made by his player's, is starting to show
itself on the pitch.
Even on the 'sidelines, the commit-
ment to the sport is showing. With not
enough boys to make a senior team,
that translated to more help behind the
bench.
"Some of the senior boys that were
keen for a team are helping to train the
junior boys," he said.
The sport has taken off with new stu-
dents, and Lindstrom said that is due to
the action rugby has to offer.
"There are a lot of Grade 9s partici-
pating," he said. "It's such a fast -paced,
exciting game. Kids are eager to sign
up."
In a sport• where making it the length
,.r the field unscathed is a rarity, Lind-
strom
is a Lind-
strom said the team is currently work-
ing on running with support. The tack-
ling part, they've picked up on.
"We've put the rest of the league on
notice with our strong tackling and fear-
less offence," he said. "They got around
us on the outside a few times... but it
was what an experienced team would
do against an inexperienced one."
The score for the girls' game was
49-0 Mitchell and the boys' were beaten
29-5. However, with the first try under
their rugby shirts there is nowhere to go
but up.
"It takes a lot of courage to do that,"
paid Lindstrom about taking on older,
Lindstrom about on older,
more experienced teams. "We're proud
of that."
As per tradition, the opposing team
picked Goderich's players of the game.
Forthe boys, it was Chad Austin and
Ryan Mcllwain and for the girls, Avery
Cyr and Sydney Ryan were voted the
two best.
Lindstrom expressed the team's
thanks to the YMCA, the Rotary Club
and especially the IODE for making the
season and the team possible.
The Vikes were at it again yesterday,
April 28. Results were unavailable as of
press time.
