Livery readies for double dose duri;ng comedic bill Dominique Milburn_ signal -star staff The Livery stage is a buzz of activity this week as cast and crew gear up for another Goderich Lit- tle Theatre (GLT) produc- tion. Joint directorial team Nina Reynolds and Susan Armstrong have paired up for the second time to showcase some of the ar- eas up-and-coming talent with two one -act produc- tions, The Death of Me, and Black Comedy. Black Comedy leads off a night of slapstick and comedy courtesy of the GLT, as the single -act Norm Foster original turns light to dark, literally. The play is a farce set in a London flat during an electrical blackout, and is written to be staged un- der a reversed lighting scheme: that is, the play opens with a dinner party beginning on a darkened stage, then a few min- utes into the show "a fuse blows", the stage lights come up, and the charac- ters are seen shambling around apparently invis- ible to one another. "In the play, the light- ing is reversed," Reynolds explained recently while putting the final touches on an elaborately simple set design. "When it's dark for the characters, stage lights are on full. If they light a match, point a flashlight, stage lights go down. It really is some- thing to see." After the physical and tense comedy wraps up, another, more stationary and dialogue -driven play begins with The Death of. Me. "Ever wondered what it would be like to suddenly find yourself summoned before the Angel of Death for the completion of documents necessary for your new post-mortem life? Possibly not nearly as amusing as Canadian playwright Norm Foster pictures it in his latest play, The Death of Me." That's part of what jour- nalist Bob Clark of the Calgary Herald had to say of the Foster composition that has taken shape once more, this time in Goder- ich. "In some ways, the two plays are opposite each other," said Reyn- olds. "While this first has an awful lot to do with physical slapstick, chang- ing quickly between four scenes, the second stays in one place with a heavy dialogue -driven humor." The result, Reynolds and Armstrong agree, is an evening of "fun enter- tainment." The pair first teamed up in 2008 when they staged See page 15 Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - Page A13 Photos by Dominique Milburn The Goderich Little Theatre is at it again, this time with a double comedy bill kicking -off this weekend.
