The two Lions Club mem- bers, Mel of the Goderich Club and Dorothy, a member of Dun- gannon, began a 260 -kilometre trek to the 16 Lions clubs in the area in an effort to raise $20,000 for . the Lions Foundation of Canada Canine Vision Guide Dog program, which provides dogs for the visually and hear- ing-impaired, the disabled and those who have seizures. Their goal was to complete the club -to -club walk by May 1, arriving at a local club on the night the club^was scheduled to meet. The former district governor for the Lions Club in 1990-91, Bogie decided to challenge the 16 Lions clubs in the district that includes; Goderich, Clin- ton, Mitchell, Seaford)", Dub- lin, Blyth, Brussels, Wingham, Teeswater, Formosa, Mildmay, Lucknow, Ripley, Auburn, Londesborough and Dungan- non. Each club is asked for a donation. While the Bogies began their walk in the cold and wind -driv- en shows of late March, their final leg to the Goderich club's meeting at the Candlelight Res- taurant last Thursday evening was a walk in the park for the couple and about 20 Goderich Lions members who followed in support. Many former God- erich Lions Club members were on hand for the walk and past . presidents' night reception. Admitting that they are both active people, the Bogies took on theproject in support of their favorite Lions' charities. While they had originally in- tended to begin their walking campaign in the fall, Dorothy fell ill and Mel suffered serious injuries in fall off a ladder that re- quired surgery. But they refused to let the physical obstacles stand in the way of their goal. "We're fortunate we've got our eyesight and legs to walk with so we Lan help the ones who can't hear, see or walk," Dorothy said in a previous in- terview. "Besides -this is helping us feel better —helping others is a great healer." The Bogies hoped that most clubs in the area would support their initiative. With over 100 dogs a year coming out of the Canine vision Program, the Bogies are hop- ing the money they raise can go towards various types of equip- ment needed to care for the dogs, including medical equip- ment such as X-ray machines and dental scalers along with heated flooring for the kennels. Dorothy and Mel will be pre- senting a cheque with the total of what they were able to raise through their walk to the Dis- trict A9 convention in Sauble Beach on May 9 and 10.
