Old Deckhands rule at Michigan tournament
Six Canadian old-timer's
hockey teams took home tro-
phies during the 24th Annual
Vehicle City International
Oldtimers Hockey Tourna-
ment in Flint during the week-
end.
It's one of the largest old-
timer's tournaments in Michi-
gan and the United States and
this year's events featured 46
teams and 718 players. There
were 27 teams from On-
tario, including teams from
Goderich, Sault Ste. Marie,
Lambton-Kent, Lucknow,
Brantford, Bothwell, Guelph,
Kitchener, LaSalle, Windsor,
Glencoe, London, Moore -
town, Dorchester, Thames-
ville, Amherstburg and
Woodstock, said tournament
founder and director Bill Ev-
erett of Flushing, Mich.
Players ranged in age from
35 to 97 and competed in
games in multiple rinks in the
Flint area on Friday, Saturday
and Sunday (April 3-5).
The Canadian teams won
six of the 11 age -divisions
and five teams from Ontario
placed second in their divi-
sion. The winning teams were
Goderich Old Deckhands
(35-40 age division); Can
Am Antiques from Lambton-
Kent (60 plus); Lucknow Old
Devils (35-40); Sault Ste.
Marie Marconi (50 plus);
Sault Ste. Marie McDougal
(45-50) Brantford Oldtimers
(45 plus). Canadian teams
finishing second in .their di-
visions were the Dorchester
Gators (35 plus); London
Huff -n -Puff (50-55); London
Classics (45-50), Kitchener -
Guelph Tri -City Dinosaurs
(45 plus); and Bothwell Old
Puckers (50-55), Everett said.
Everett said in past years
the Canadian teams have won
even more of the divisions
than they did this year.
"Looking at the past this
year was probably the best
representation for the Ameri-
can teams in the champion-
ships," Everett said. "We
usually don't win that many.
Maybe there is coming to be
a little parity. Maybe we're
getting stronger , teams from
the U.S. But I think it changes
from year to year. It's nice to
see some of our local teams
winning and it's nice to see the
Canadian teams winning."
The non-profit tournament
in 2008 raised more than
$2,000 for the Whaley Chil-
dren's Center, a Flint area
charity for area ,youth. The fi-
nancial results for this year's
tournament were still being
tallied.
"We are so happy to have
this tournament in our area,"
said Gloria DeHart, vice
president of sales for the Flint
Area Convention and Visitors
Bureau. "We especially love
having our many visitors
from Canada. They continue
to come to this event year af-
ter year so we must be doing
something right."
