Bar 220. 120 Nuckins Street. Goderich, Ontario N7A 4116 EDITORIAL Square a treasured and unique people place The Squame. It's our indelible stamp. Our identifier. Our mark. Our brand. The Square is Goderich and it is unique. Even people from outside the area, with a casual or passing knowledge 01 Ontario geography know of our Square. It's as if, to those outsiders, that Goderichites lost all semblance of geometric principles and oddly called a round downtown, The Square. How could that happen? Visitors giggle with delight at the prospect of meet- ing the shapeless and geometrically impaired residents who call their round or octagonal main street a square. We can live with the ridicule. We have The Square. I have painstakingly outlined the valid reasoning behind the term The. Square as an accurate moniker for our downtown area. Visitors grudgingly nod in receipt of the logical explanation. The radiating streets form a perfect square. But, it's so much more fun to think of local residents as not being able to recognize their round shapes from octagonal or square ones. Regardless, we have The Square and it in Just one of the jewels that makcs. Goderich a unique and lovely town. And so it has been interesting to read and listen to debate about potential use of The Square as an event facility, closed to vehicular traffic and entirely open to the walking public for special events, It makes such good sense, The Square is a people place, the ultimate in venues to stage community events and gatherings. Closing the area to vehicular traffic for specific summer festivals and events will only enhance the participation and the experience. Who wouldn't welcome the opportunity to walk The Square on a warm sum- mer evening, partake of a community event and not have to worry about cross- ing a busy street? It would definitely create a distinct and welcome atmosphere. The town, in concert with its merchants and BIA, has worked together to cre- ate a downtown area that welcomes visitors to its shops and the quiet shade of Courthouse Park. Over the years, the sidewalks have been expanded to accom- modate pedestrian traffic comfortably and allow for sidewalk displays and cafes where patrons can watch the world go by on sunny afternoons. The bandshell was reintroduced to the park, provokingnostalgic memories of days when the townsquare was a meetinand entertainment lake. It is becom- ing S p that once again, Countless community events are staged in Courthouse Park and in and around The Square. It Is an inviting plaice. Deputy -mayor John Grace is right in his , assssertion that many community events would be ideal for .pedestrian -only traffic and that more people on the sidewalks would translate into more people in the stores, Simply, more people would probably attend events on The Square knowing that they could easily walk around the thildren'ss Festival or the Festival of Arts and Crafts or an antique auto show. The Square is such a valuable resource and natural gathering place for people and events. It would .be such a shame not to exploit it. 1).S. *soma* the. lladrrkh N1ti%m,1'. lar, published every Wednridar al O, derkh, Uatarla It tate 4111e NK►►al'Nar /►u1i11.i/rin% Gone ►►JC'ommunhY Nrwxpnharr, a dlvi►rnn gl&nvrs /whir hr's, The O(deekh Signal Ytaeehall acs br liable/or Jaliu►r m publith as ail far typographical from in publk'allnn 'soot is the Mt east of that portion of the ltd In wi,kh tllr IMP o' ward, Thr'Oaderlch dlpaale'tae mws'vea the right hi &/rl-1 or sdll any ndvxnt v►nswrt, the Onldreh Slina1•Siar b a proud m ',Orr (Ohl Canadian (.'m, rranity Alos;spoport,4s,m l i/u, (('CNA/ and The lla ne& Cn►mmffimlly Newspapers Ase -Madan (OCNAJ. • OM 2014 I ditorlui Deadline%.,, So IT'S A DEAL THEN e+s A BOX of Cl(ARS AND You LiFr THE.
