Members of Huron County
Council gathered on the steps
of the Goderich court house
April 17, where Huron -Bruce
MPP Carol Mitchell doled
out $300,000 of Communi-
ties in Tranisition funds.
The funding comes' from
the Ministiry of Economic
Development. and Trade, and
is intended to help communi-
ties research, retrain and re-
bound from job loss.
Mitchell said the funds are
intended for communities
facing challenges to explore
new economic possibilities.
Especially, she added, com-
munities where one large
employer shuts down like
Can -Gro in Exeter, Wescast
in Wingham and Volvo in
Goderich.
"We're laying a foundation
for the future," said Mitchell.
"A path going forward."
Six projects were approved
for Huron County, including
Goderich Harbour, where
part of the money will be
spent to do the pre -planning
necessary for new develop-
ment in the•area.
"This allows us to do stud-
ies to expand and redevelop,"
said Goderich deputy -mayor
John Grace. "It's crucial for
the planning stages that we
start that immediately."
Both Huron County War-
den Ken Oke and Grace talk-
ed about the importance of
getting Goderich's shipping
capabilities expanded and
the boost it could offer the
regional economy.
"The H2O highway is
to county
a huge component," said
Grace.
Oke said expanding the
harbour could greatly in-
crease the possibilities for
commercial trade in Huron
- the effects of which could
spill over to the county's oth-
er industries.
In the south of the county,
funding was approved for
the Centralia College facil-
ity to build a business case to
develop an aero,nautics and
aircraft refurbishing training
facility there.
That interest in aviation
also came through in the
north, as the Richard Laven
Airport will also be exam-
ined for possible other uses.
Again in Goderich, funding
will be set aside for a prop-
erty assessment of the Volvo
plant. The goal is to attract
reinvestment in the exisiting
facilities.
Rounding out the county's
initiatives are marketing
strategies, web site develop-
ment and the creation of an
Economic Development Op-
portunities Blueprint to di-
rect future development.
Together with the county's
$138,000 leveraging, there is
a total of $438,000 for the six
projects combined.
"This is going to do a lot
of good for Huron County,"
said Oke to Mitchell. •"We
know you'll be happy with
the results."
According to a press re-
lease from Mitchell's office,
the Ontario government has
more than doubled support to
municipal operating budgets
since 2003.
