After returning from the 2009 Sears Drama Festival in Stratford, the Goder- ich District Collegiate Institute (GDCI) drama team is sharpening their teeth for the home showing of Carmilla. The 2009 drama team came home from the annual playoffs with four awards after their staging of the original adaptation of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's gothic novella, Carmilla. "To tell you the truth, their perfor- mance was magnificent," said playwright and director David Armour. "It was one of the best things I've ever seen." He went on to call it "spot on," a per- formance that, had the audience "in the palm of their hands." It's not surprising then, that the production garnered the troupe the only standing ovation of the festival competition. The story follows a young girl haunt- ed by her dreams of a beautiful phantom. When she comes face to face with an in- jured traveler, she quickly realizes her dreams may soon become reality. The production features a cast and crew of 33 GDCI students who are coached along by Armour and assistant director Warren Robbinson. GDCI mu- sic teacher Shelly Johnston provides an original score, while Kathy Wetlauper and Jenny Armour took charge of ward- robe and make-up respectively. Carmilla earned set designers Sadie Padfield and Victor Kloeze along with orchestra leaders Alex. and Mary Ross and Benson Brown awards of distinctive merit, while Bronwyn Armstrong took home a nod for her acting performance as Laura. But that's not all — An award of excel- lence was handed over to Anne Potter for her lusty performance as title char- acter haracter Carmilla. "They really did a fantastic job," Ar- mour added, "they took their game to a whole new level." While Carmilla didn't advance in the competition this time around, Armour said that he and his team did exactly what they set out to do. "All I can ask of these kids is that they do the best job they can do, and that's what they did. I'm extremely proud of what they have accomplished." The only thing left to do, he said, is bring it home and share the team's col- lective passion and talent with their own community. Carmilla is set to run two productions this Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. in the GDCI drama suite. The school's hospitality program ' has also jumped on board to lend their sup- port by offering restaurant service before each run. Beginning at 6:30, theatergoers can partake in a beef medallion dinner fora separate cost of $15. Tickets to the home showing of Carmilla are $10 each. Purchase information for both the dinner and theatre productions can be obtained by phoning the school at 519-524-7353.
