Progress on weapon
elimination now at hand
Ridding the planet of nuclear weapons has been the subject
of intense discussion and considerable effort since even before
the explosion of the first bomb in 1945'. For the most part, it
has been. a dismal failure.
Despite all the talk, the treaties, the politics and the diplo-
macy, nuclear weapons continued to proliferate and the nations
building them multiplied so that by 1985, there were more than
enough to obliterate the planet several times over.
While the number of nuclear weapons since the end of the
Cold War may be decreasing, the dangers is in fact increas-
ing.
North Korea is pursuing a nuclear weapons program and
launched a long-range ballistic missile last week. Iran has a
secret enrichment program, and Pakistan is well on its way to
becoming the wild west of the nuclear weapons establish-
ment.
What better time, then, for the world's superstar politician,
United States President Barack Obama, to remind us we can all
aspire to a "world without nuclear weapons."
Is it possible? Of course it is.
Will it be simple?
Of course not.
But, ironically, it should be easier than solving the global
financial crisis, making affordable health care available to all
Americans, ending poverty, fixing Iraq or combating climate
change. It would be nice to think so, at least.
Obama has committed to:
Negotiating a new strategic arms reduction treaty with
Russia; having the U.S. ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban
Treaty; controlling or stopping production of fissile material
(the stuff designed to cause a nuclear explosion); and strength-
ening the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.
It's a challenge, to be sure. The United States, Russia,
Britain, France and China may be ready to admit the madness,
but India, Pakistan and Israel will be a tough sell. Never mind
North Korea or Iran.
Still, having a world leadersay it out loud is progress
enough. 'Maybe we can change the attitude of despair world-
wide and reverse the conventional wisdom that nothing can be
done. The fact is we all know it. can.
Now a real leader says it, too. (Sun Media)
