Dan Schwab sun media With 1,000 workers in Huron County's manufacturing in- dustry losing their jobs over the past year, diversifying the local industry to focus on the burgeoning wind energy sector is the region's best hope for a recovery, says the president of the Huron Manufacturers' Association. Now that Ontario's Minister of Energy George Smither- man has announced he'd like to see 50,000 people in the province employed by green jobs, the time is ripe for Huron County to look at manufacturing wind turbines, Chris Meier says. In February, Meier attended a conference in Toronto host- ed by .the Canadian Wind Energy Association, where wind energy developers and manufacturers were told to anticipate a substantial growth in the industry across North America. Meier says representatives from several. companies from Huron County attended the conference, including WesCast in Wingham and Progressive Turf Equipment Inc. and En- vira North Systems Ltd. from Seaforth. . "We're starting to see a pattern," Meier says. "There is lots of interest." Historically, wind turbines for projects in Ontario have been manufactured primarily by European companies, with only a few components made in North America, Meier sLys. Minister Smitherman's proposal for a green shift for the industry would see a mandatory proportion of the manufac- turing to be done in Ontario. In the recent months, Meier has been researching possi- bilities for HMA members in the wind energy industry. "It used to be something that we didn't understand or comprehend. Now we have large buildings becoming avail- able here. We have people available," he says. "We are in a perfect spot with the Goderich harbour and can ship these out on freighter." The HMA, which is working in partnership with the County of Huron to develop opportunities for local com- panies, have contacted original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), which use components used by other companies in its own product.
