Honour thy coach - they deserve it
Well folks, it's April now although
by the time you read this you may not
be able to tell by looking out a win-
dow.
Yes, the horrible winter snows have
gone, only to be replaced by sunshine,
scattered showers and horrible winter
snows, alternately..
Now is the time for wildflow-
ers, rubber boots and the occasional
parka, and for many kids in town, it's
also the time to mothball the skates
and bang last year's mud out of their
cleats - hopefully outside the house.
It's with that in mind I write this,
because next Saturday, April 18, is the
beginning of Ontario Coaches Week.
I've had many coaches over the
years, be they baseball, basketball,
soccer or pine -riding. I can still re-
member each of them and what they
taught me about the respective games
we happened to be playing.
These are the folks who give their
time freely, teaching kids the funda-

mentals of team-
work, the rewards
of effort and the im-
portance of persis-
tence... especially
during the puberty
years, where a sim-
ple growth spurt can
take a third -stringer
and make a starting forward of him.
They are also the folks who en-
courage developing talents, celebrate
times of triumph and console in times
of defeat.
Now, the Ministry of Health Pro-
motion and Sport is getting behind the
notion of getting behind our coaches.
Which brings me to this: I wantto
hear from you.
Kids, parents and even fellow
coaches, now is the time to let our
readership know just how vital these
people are to not only in the continu-
ation of minor sports but the develop-
ment of our athetes.

It could be high school, minor
sports, or house leagues. It could be
past, present or future. Doesn't mat-
ter. How have coaches helped you,
your kids or your community?
Back when the Zurich boys were
nothing short of the most dynamic
baseball town in southern Huron
County, we were coached by a guy
everybody called Wally.
Every Saturday morning we were
at the diamond bright and early for
practice and Wally would be there
hitting fly balls for the outfielders,
grounders for the infielders, teaching
kids how to get in front of the ball to
catch it and to not be afraid of an in-
coming pitch.
He encouraged us to try harder, he
chewed us out if we were slacking off
and he was always good for a pat on.
the back for a job well done.
Of course, when . I got to high
school and played indoor sports, my
experiences with coaching took on a
whole different perspective.
I learned phrases such as, "No
smoking during the tournament,"
