"You guys are heroes," said Bergman to the gym full of stu- dents, teachers and parents who contributed to the campaign. Her message boiled down to a single point: "If you can .help somebody, why not?" she asked the assembly. Free the Children has three ways students can help people in de- veloping nations. Brick -by -Brick raises money for new schools, a clean water program allows those same students to bring clean water to their families and an alternative income initiative provides stabil- ity through livestock and textiles. The Brick -by -Brick campaign . was initiated at Robertson by teacher Tracy Peters, about three years ago. "I went to a conference and heard Craig Kielburger speak," she said. "He was talking about empowering children to help oth- er children." . Photo by Gerard Creces Bailea Erb, Maren Mackenzie, Emily Hoggarth and Tyson Kovats present Marieke Bergman with $8,500 to help build a school in Kenyan as part of the Free the Children initiative. event, plant sales, and individual contributions from students, par- ents, staff as well as the Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge all helped fund the educational investment in Kenya. "It was amazing," said Peters. "Just the last year we really came together and raised a lot of mon- ey."„ Peters said students Bailey Erb and Tyson Kovats took their fund- raising to the next level. Erb organized a book/bake sale that raised $400 and Kovats, she said, asked for donations to the Brick by Brick campaign instead of gifts at his birthday party. "It was bice that the kids took this on," she said. "The me to we philosophy is really catching on." Parents also donated money to the campaign in lieu of teacher gifts, Peters said. In addition to Brick by Brick, students at Robertson also partici- pated in Halloween for Hunger - another FTC initiative. "We collected over 500 cans for the local food bank," she said. "It's not just globally, it's also locally." For more information on Free the Children, visit their Web site at: www.freethechildren.com. When he spoke about how many schools FTC has built, Peters said she was sold on the idea and brought it to Robertson. The idea has caught on and so has the generous school community. In the past year, students, parents and teachers raised about $3,500 to top the project off.
