Return of winter changes roadwork plans in Goderich

While heavy snows Sunday night and
Monday morning put a slight delay on
roadwork plans in Goderich, Public
Works manager Chip Wilson said the
town is ready to go for its 2009 projects
and setting its sights on ones further
down the road.
Work was set to begin Monday on
McDonald Street from Raglan to Blake,
completing what was begun last year.
"We were going to start this morn-
ing," he said Monday. "But the weather
has kind of changed plans."
Water mains in that stretch of road
will be replaced, and the road itself will
be resurfaced.
Wilson said workers ran out of time
last year, and didn't want to be working
while the ice was in at the busy Memo-
rial Arena.
The project is looking at a completion
date of mid -late May and costs in the
neighbourhood of $170,000.
Meanwhile, tenders for Elgin Ave-
nue - the town's only other scheduled
road work this summer - were opened
last week at the March 30 meeting of
councilor
It was a unanimous decision - Lavis
Contracting will be doing sanitary sew-
er and resurfacing between Wellington
and Waterloo Streets.
The work comes at a cost of
$357,237.30 and is expected to be com-
pleted by July 10. Lavis is also doing
the road work on McDonald Street.

Wilson said that's it for ready -to -go
road work for the town this summer,
however there are a number of projects
in the pre -engineering stage.
"As of right now, that's what we
have," he said. "There are other streets
that are going to be tendered but at a
later date."
Included in those plans are South
Street from Blake to Britannia, which
would get a full reconstruction of both
water main and sewer; St. David Street
from Kingston Street to Victoria will
also get a full reconstruction as would
Colborne from The Square to Nelson
street.
"That's what . the plans are for
2009," Wilson said. "Still pending
engineering."
No dates are set for South, St. David
or Colborne Streets yet, and no tenders
have been sent out either.
BM Ross is handling the pre -engi-
neering. In earlier budget sessions,
the town set aside $100,000 for the
pre -engineering.

Fund allocation
expected in April
From Page 1
McDonnell said the charity may have
to make some hard decisions in their
• shortfall. It might not be able to provide
some one-time grants, but it is too soon
to say what cuts may have to be made.
Recognizing that the demand on
the . ten member agencies have also in-
creased, the allocations committee is
currently meeting to determine how to
appropriately allocate the funds UW has
raised and will be announced by the end
of April.
While one campaign falls slightly
undergoal, another is reporteddly right
on track.
According to Cpt. Krista Andrews, the
Salvation Army has been keeping on tar-
get with their fundraising efforts, up, in
fact, after the Christmas season.
"We haven't felt it locally yet, but we
expect at some point we will," she said.
