Goderich Little Theatre president Steph-
anie Scholten doesn't mince words.
"We've been before council recently
with a plea for money to help maintain the
Livery," she said at the March 30 meet-
ing of Goderich Town Council. "Goderich
Little Theatre has reached a crossroads of
sorts. (The Livery) is facing repairs be-
yond our capacity."
Scholten and Chris Watson led the dep-
utations before town council last week,
petitioning on behalf of an aging building
approaching the point of no return.
Watson, a theatre enthusiast, said the
.Livery was one of the biggest reasons for
his family's decision to move to Goderich
but that it needs help.
• "We want to make plays. The (Livery)
serves as a means to that end," he said.
"We are requesting we sit down and try to
work together."
However, the last deputation led by
Scholten early in the .New Year's budget
deliberations was met with the Livery re-
pairs being deemed a low priority on the
town's to-do list.
However, that attitude may be
changing.
"We're waiting. - with baited breath,"
said Coun. Heather Lyons, who noted the
Livery's fund-raising power during their
Raise the Roof event.
Demand for road
salt on the rise

the labour agreement augers well for
the continued growth and expansion of
the rock salt mining business.
"The teams did an outstanding job
and reached an early settlement, which
is unusual for us," Mine Manager Row-
land Howe said. "It is a good settlement
and we have improved relationships
through the process. It sets the scene
for future endeavors and future expecta-
tions of the business."
The demand for road salt has been
particularly robust over the past several
years and Howe explained the mine is
in a period of rebuilding depleted in-
ventories around the Great Lakes. Also,
the company's expansion program will
begin with excavation at the site within
the next four to six weeks. A building
has already been demolished on the
property.
Both sides have worked at improving
the relationship, CEP National Repre-
sentative, Glenn Sorrier said adding that
the process was completed in a busi-
nesslike manner with good results.
"We spent time since the.last contract
building a relationship and it's work-
ing," he said. "Everybody's happy, the
company is doing well and the miners
are working hard to get product out. The
two parties reached a fair deal."
The contract nuns through to April 1, 2012.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt asked for a mo-
tion to move the matter to administration,
adding council needs to remember how
strong a community component the the-
atre is moving forward.
"We need to grow the cultural footprint
of this community," he said.
Coun. Ray Hurd noted during a recent
tourism symposium he attended, the arts
were one of the basic building blocks of
any community.
The final piece of the puzzle will be
laid before both the GLT and council once
consultant Janice Barlow delivers her re-
port on the viability of an arts centre in
Goderich.
"There won't be much happening until
we get that report," said clerk -administra-
tor Larry McCabe.
The report is due back this month.
