Thanks in part to a resolution passed at
council's April 1 session, the county has
welcomed Dr. Nancy Cameron into its
fold as the new Medical Officer of Health
effective April 6.
Council learned Cameron is a Mitchell
native, who has recently returned to the
area to care for a parent.
County Warden Ken Oke says Cameron
is a 'welcome addition to the county, and
that recruiting a new medical officer of
health is a feat worthy of praise for the
recruitment committee. Oke thanked the
county's human -resources manager Darcy
Michaud and committee chairman Bernie
MacLellan (Huron East) for
their "hard work."
"We're quite fortunate,"
says Oke, noting a lot of re-
gions have gone years without
a medical officer of health in
place.
Council also approved a
motion to move towards a
single leadership model with
the health unit, which means
the Medical Officer of Health
is akin to the Chief Executive
Officer of the health unit. The
former director's position is
being changed to a business
manager's position, which is a
spot that has yet to be tilled.
WARDEN'S REPORT
County Warden Ken Oke
reports March was a mellow
month during his address to
county council.
Highlights of the month,
says Oke, include attending
a Water Protection Steering
Committee meeting, a Zone 5
conference for the Legion, as
well as participating in the of-
ficial launch of the PRISM 911
program, which is designed to
call affected county residents
in the event of an emergency..
Oke notes the PRISM 911
system is only the second of
its kind in Canada, with the
other being in Quinte West. He

adds that Essex County has an emergency
system modelled after an American -based
system, but the PRISM 91 1 system is con-
sidered to be superior.
Oke also notes attending a ceremony
honouring Huron Perth Healthcare Alli-
ance employees alongside county coun-
cillors Joseph Seili (Huron East) and Deb
Shewfelt (Goderich) on March 30.
"You need them at a time when you're
sick. Nurses have a good .day every day
they are in the hospital," says Oke, adding
it was pleasant to see them honoured.
